Gossamer Gear LT5 Carbon Fiber Trekking Poles Review

Article by Markus Zinkl

Gossamer Gear LT5 Trekking Poles (€ 196,45, $195)

Introduction

When it comes to trekking poles, the Gossamer Gear LT5s stand out for their minimal weight, impressive durability, and thoughtful design. For serious hikers looking to lighten their load, these poles offer several key benefits, though a few drawbacks might make other options more suitable for budget-conscious or less weight-sensitive hikers.

Pros of the Gossamer Gear LT5 Trekking Poles

Ultralight Design

Weighing only 141 g/ 5 ounces per pole (or 136 g/ 4.6 ounces without the straps and mud/snow baskets), the LT5s are incredibly light. This minimal weight makes them ideal for ultralight backpackers who prioritize every ounce. The low weight is especially useful if you’re using trekking poles as part of your shelter structure, as they help keep the total shelter weight to a minimum. During testing, their ability to fully support weight on rocky trails was remarkable.

Durable Carbon Fiber Build

The poles’ lightness is due to their carbon fiber construction, which is also responsible for the LT5s’ high price. Carbon fiber has revolutionized various outdoor gear categories, offering reduced weight without compromising performance. While carbon fiber is generally strong, it does have a potential downside: unlike aluminum, it can fail catastrophically without visible warning signs like cracks. That said, the LT5s are robust enough for most trekking situations. GossamerGear does not offer a warranty for breakage on the carbon fiber tubing, so users should be aware that any replacements will come out of pocket. Replacement sections are available for purchase if needed from GossamerGear.

Comfortable Handles and Grip

One of the standout features of the LT5s is their handle design. Though they resemble cork, the handles are actually made from a soft, high-quality foam that’s incredibly comfortable, even over long distances. Unlike rubberized handles, which can become slippery and uncomfortable, the LT5 handles hold up well against sweat and varying weather conditions. They’re some of the most comfortable handles on the market and the adjustable wrist straps add to the comfort. They are not padded but the slightly stretchy material is really comfortable and additionally saves some weight, compared to padded straps. Additionally, the straps are removable, providing flexibility based on individual preferences.

Compact and Convenient

The LT5s collapse to a length of 60 cm/ 23.5 inches, making them easy to stow in a backpack. This feature is particularly helpful for scrambles or easier terrain where poles aren’t necessary. When packed away, they add just over half a pound to the pack weight, a negligible addition that aligns with the poles' ultralight goals. The poles are adjustable from 105 cm to a max length of 130 cm/ 51 inches, which is worth considering if you’re using them as part of a shelter setup, as the height may not be ideal for every configuration.

Effective Tips and Basket Options

The poles come with interchangeable rubber tips and snow baskets, which make them versatile across different terrain types. The traction from these tips performs well on various surfaces, while the snow baskets add stability in snowy conditions. Both the tips and baskets can be easily replaced at a reasonable price when worn down or lost, which adds convenience to the overall design.

Cons of the Gossamer Gear LT5 Trekking Poles

High Price

At €196 / $195, the LT5s are on the expensive side compared to other trekking poles. While the quality, comfort, and light weight justify the price for ultralight enthusiasts, it may be a steep cost for hikers who are less concerned with shedding every ounce. For those who simply need reliable trekking poles, there are plenty of more affordable options available.

Conclusion

Overall, the Gossamer Gear LT5 Trekking Poles are a top choice for hikers and backpackers focused on keeping their pack weight low without compromising on strength or comfort. They’re light, durable, and offer excellent grip and adjustability, even in challenging conditions. The high price might make them less appealing to casual hikers or those on a budget, but for dedicated ultralight enthusiasts, the LT5s are an investment that pays off in performance and long-term reliability.

Tester Profile

Markus Zinkl: I’m 34 years old and live in a small village in Bavaria, Germany. I started hiking and backpacking 5-6 years ago. Coming from trail running and with light and fast in mind, I started hiking and fast packing with ultralight gear. Over the years I tried and tested a lot of gear, always in search of weight savings. Although still trying to stay out of the ultralight rabbit hole. I spend most of my days off from work on the trail, with at least one 2-3 week thru-hike. Among the more well known trails I have hiked over the last few years are the GR221, WHR (Walker’s Haute Route), TMB (Tour du Mont Blanc), TC (Tour du Cervin-Matterhorn) and Via Alpina Switzerland. As you probably notice by now, I’m at home in the mountains. So if I’m not running or thru-hiking a longer trail, I’m probably somewhere in the Alps checking out some shorter trails.
