Puma Deviate Nitro 2 (160€)

Introduction

Newton Running Distance + Review 4 Comparisons

Article by Michael Ellenberger

Newton Running Distance+ ($170)

The Distance+ has been Newton’s high-end, lightweight performance trainer or racing option for years. This year’s version is lighter, flashier, and (in my opinion) better than Distances of the past, though this isn’t an unabashed love. All that’s good and bad… coming up below!

I’ve said it before for the Garvity +, and for the Distance 9 and Fate 9,and I’ll say it again - Newtons, as you likely remember, have their signature lug system underfoot. And once again, as far as I can tell, this signature cushioning platform is not going anywhere (heck, Newton doesn’t even sell shoes like the MV2 with nearly-there lugs anymore!), so if you are not a fan of this cushioning, then the best I can say is that this shoe isn’t for you. For everyone else… let’s talk Distance+.

It is also important to note the Distance + is constructed of recycled materials that remove 4+ water bottles from the waste chain and is formulated to biodegrade 75% faster than standard shoes.

Stats

Official Weight: 8.0 oz / 227g

Drop: 2mm

Price: $170.

UA Flow Velociti Elite Review with 8 Comparisons

Article by Ryan Eiler

UA Flow Velociti Elite ($250)

Pros:

Race flat feel semi flexible super shoe: best run fast off the stable but narrow heel Sam/Ryan

Fairly responsive and quick to rebound for 5-10k efforts Ryan

Foot hold is controlled very well by the strong upper Ryan

Cons:

Competitive weight but..narrow rear platform and less than max limit heel limits race distance utility to less than a half for me. Others deliver more stack and platform width at the same or less weight  Sam/Ryan

Rear of midsole needs to be wider and extend further back Ryan

Fits much longer than labeled size Ryan

Firm midsole lacks the rebound and leg-saving abilities of its competitors Ryan/Sam

Mid/forefoot feels underpowered and under-cushioned, relative to the rear Ryan/Sam

Outsole lacks the tenacity and durability of molded rubber Ryan

REVIEW DO ASICS MAGIC SPEED 2 (Portuguese)

Artigo de Daniel da Silva. 🇧🇷🇵🇹

ASICS Magic Speed 2 (R$ 1.099,99 / $150 US

Me acompanhe a seguir e descubra.

Pontos positivos

Testbericht: Puma Deviate Nitro 2 (German)

Artikel von Markus Zinkl

Puma Deviate Nitro 2(159,95 €)

Mizuno Wave Sky 6 Review

Article by Jeff Beck

Mizuno Wave Sky 6 ($170)

Introduction

Mizuno is clearly shifting gears, introducing the ultra premium and ultra sustainable Wave Neo Ultra and Wave Neo Wind making performance and eco-friendly both priorities - and they have continued that with the Wave Sky 6. On the surface the 6th model seems nearly identical to the 5 from a year ago as Mizuno’s most cushioned daily trainer. And while the changes from 5 to 6 are incredibly subtle, the sustainability of the shoe is impressive - using recycled materials in every part of the shoe. Doing that, while still maintaining a premium feel and cushy ride is just that much more impressive.

Pros:

-Lots of big cushion without a hint of mushiness

-One of the best examples of “Mizuno soft” plush yet firm cushioning

-Minimal changes from last year’s shoe, with good refinement

-Toebox didn’t get bigger but the material got stretchier

-Virtually every element of the shoe has recycled materials

Cons:

-Overall shoe weight coming from a dense midsole

-$170 price tag stings

Stats

Official Weight: men's 10.7 oz  / 303g (US9)  /  women's 9.1 oz / 258g (US8)

  Sample: men’s 11.35 oz  / 322 g (US10.5)

Stack Height: men’s & women’s 36 mm heel / 28 mm forefoot. Available now. $170

Karhu Ikoni Trail Initial Review

Article by Sam Winebaum

Karhu Ikoni Trail ($155, $160 water resistant)

Update: Our full multi tester review of the ikoni Trail is posted HERE

Introduction

The Ikoni Trail is a new max cushioned heavy duty trail runner from iconic brand Karhu of Finland which was founded in 1916.

Karhu’s history in running and track and field goes way back.. All the way to the 1920 and 1924 Olympics where they were on the feet of the javelin gold medalist and most notably the “Flying Finns” including Pavel Nurmi who won 5 gold medals and eventually a total of nine. Heck they even came up with what is now adidas 3 Stripes logo which they sold to little known adidas in 1952 after those Olympics where Karhu shod athletes won 15 gold medals including those of Emil Zapotek… for the equivalent of 1600 euros. (Source: Karhu)

Roll forward many decades and Karhu is still at it! For quite a while their key technology has been their Fulcrum system and that is after they came up with the first patented air cushion in 1970 and more recently fits based on millions of foot scans by retail partners.

I reviewed the Ikoni Ortix way back in 2018. It was a fine and lively road shoe but nothing since  from Karhu.

When Karhu proposed the Ikoni Trail and I was immediately intrigued. Max cushioned at 37mm heel (measured)  / 32mm forefoot (spec 5mm drop) it features the Fulcrum to stabilize and roll you forward at transition and especially noted a highly pronounced toe spring (curve up) created by the lower denser midsole foam wrapping up at the toe and also acting as a very stout toe bumper.  At first glance the geometry promised smooth propulsion for this big shoe running and also walking .

The upper was striking as well with a very solidly reinforced rear transitioning to soft pliable mesh at midfoot held by a gusset tongue and internal overlays and finally most interestingly a very soft toe box area with a highly asymmetric lacing system.

The massive outsole with 5mm lugs promised great grip but also contributes to the shoe’s weight of 11.61 oz  / 328 g (US8.5/EU42) in my US 8.5. Alot for a modern “trail runner”. What was it? A “near hiker”, a tech trails monster, a mellow highly cushioned cruiser, even ultra shoe? To a certain extent I think maybe all of these but let's find out!

Pros:

Superb upper combining plenty of rear hold with an easy fitting yet secure front comfort

Combination of ascending Fulcrum plastic shank and big toe spring is effective to roll this big shoe through the stride on flats and uphills

Combination of softer rebounding top foam and lower firmer foam delivers a well cushioned yet very stable ride.

Smooth flowing and flexible, despite stack and weight

Plenty of inherent rock protection

Should make an excellent walking, hiking, and fast packing option

Cons:

Weight..at the upper limits of practical for daily trail runs

5mm lug outsole is overdone, adds to weight and makes the firm ground ride firmer than it could be at the heel on hard surfaces.
