Puma Run XX NITRO Multi Tester Review

Article by Dominique Winebaum and Renee Krusemark

Puma Run XX NITRO ($130)

Introduction

Dominique: A new wave of running shoe brands is making quick strides and catching up with the more established competition.  As a contributor for RTR, my last 4 pairs of review shoes have been from brands not previously and/or typically associated with running: Diadora, On Running, Craft Sporstwear, and now PUMA.  An impressive line-up of running shoes distinctly different with each brand bringing its own innovative platform,  technology and design to the roads.

With its female specific design, the Puma Run XX NITRO is a welcomed evolution in running shoes and sets itself apart from the market and the competition. The fit is tailored to “hug a woman’s heel, instep, and arch” and this is exactly what I have been experiencing running in my Run XX Nitro.  A snug fit that contours my feet with plenty of room in the toe box. It has a midsole made with a new firmer yet still supercritical processed  NITRO Foam that invites mileage.

It includes a new technology, runGuide, to help keep your foot centered when running. This is a quick introduction to some of the Run XX Nitro features! Let’s see how they run.

Saucony Tempus Multi Tester Review: A Versatile, Support Daily Training Ride for all Runner Types! 18 Comparisons

Article by Renee Krusemark, Beto Hughes, Ryan Eiler, Joost de Raeymaeker, Derek Li, Michael Ellenberger, and Sam Winebaum

Saucony Tempus ($160)

Introduction

Sam: The Tempus is a light “stability” trainer that upends the usual, tired and often over prescriptive approaches to stability. No posts, no plastic pieces, no over firm foam or overbuilt upper here. Saucony simply used a moderately firm PWRRUN EVA foam to create an external guidance frame running along most of the outer sidewalls and under foot at the outsole but just along the outer edges except at the medial midfoot where it becomes a pad of support at the road.

Diagram: Saucony China

They then filled the frame  with PEBA expanded beads PWRRUN PB foam with its responsive rebound. In a  neat twist, they kept the PB as the entire midsole at the heel laterally and to a lesser extent medially to provide a soft and rebounding landing.

PB foam as used in Saucony’s Endorphin Speed and Pro and in their new Endorphin Edge  is lighter than EVA while providing strong energy return and as a result the high stacked  36.5 heel / 28.5 mm forefoot Tempus weighs a mere 9.03 oz  / 266g (US9).

Carrying forward the support and light theme, the upper is thin, dense engineered mesh reminiscent of trail shoe uppers with a single stout overlay on both sides  tied into the laces

The Tempus is for sure intriguing, potentially bridging several worlds: support trainer, neutral trainer, high stack max cushion, and super foam powered ride. Let’s see what our testers thought, noting  that most as a rule steer clear of “support/stability” type shoes.

Pros:

Good weight/cushion ratio: Renee/Sam/Beto/Ryan/Joost/Derek

Smooth and comfortable ride: Renee/Sam/Beto/Ryan/Joost/Derek

Versatile: Sam/Joost/Derek

Easy riding, unobtrusive and adaptive support, for all runner types & not just “pronators”: Sam/Ryan/Joost/Michael

Firmer EVA frame gently but cleary guides and “hugs”  in direction of travel:Sam/Beto

PEBA core softens landings and provides some toe off rebound: Sam/Beto

Recycled upper content is very high: Sam/Ryan/Joost

Shoe feels light on foot: Beto

Firmer EVA guides the foot naturally with a smooth roll forward sensation and a nice rebound from the PWRRUN PB: Beto/Derek

Breathable upper and nice balance between comfort and performance lockdown: Beto, Michael

Good for most types of paces and runs: Joost, Michael/Derek

Cons:

Price: Renee/Sam/Joost/Derek

A bit less vertical medial sidewall would perfect ride for more neutral runners: Sam/Joost/Michael

Bit firmer feel than expected: Beto

Takes a bit of break-in / getting used to: Ryan/Sam/Joost/Michael

Relatively slow ride transition, could use more forefoot snap and pop: Ryan/Sam/Joost

Confusing place in the Saucony lineup (beefed up Kinvara? Toned down Guide?): Joost

Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next % 2 1st Run Video Review & all the Details: Big, Friendly, Fast. The Sub 2 shoe now for more of us!

Video by Sam Winebaum

Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next % 2 ($275)

In the video below, I take the Alphafly 2 out for a first run great run.

The Alphafly 2 sees:

  • a wider platform. I measure 5mm wider at the widest points at the heel and forefoot with also raised sidewalls to stabilize the foot
  • 8mm drop vs 4mm drop for v1
  • a new outsole and new underfoot geometry, with more rear stability and more forward roll
  • AtomFit 2.0 upper which without overlays is more structured and very open.
The approx. 40mm heel / 32mm forefoot Alphafly 2 does gain 14 grams in my US 8.5 samples over v1 but still checks in at a very reasonable 7.76 oz / 221g in my size.

Comparisons in the video include, in detail Alphafly 1 including via an A/B run Alphafly 1 on one foot with Alphafly 2 on the other, as well short comparisons to other super marathon shoes such as Vaporfly, adios Pro 2, RC Elite 2, Puma FAST-R.

adidas Terrex Agravic Flow 2 Review. 10 Comparisons

Article by Mike Postaski

adidas Terrex Agravic Flow 2 ($140)

Introduction

After never having previously run in any adidas trail shoes, I’ve been able to run and test most of the current Adidas Terrex/Agravic trail lineup.  Just to set expectations - the Speed Ultra (RTR Review) still holds the spot as my favorite all-time trail shoe.  But I’ve been quite disappointed with the Adidas trail shoes designated with the ‘Agravic’ tag.  Neither the Agravic Ultra (RTR Review) or the Agravic Pro (RTR Review) have found a spot in my rotation.  Both felt overly heavy and bulky on the run, and both had big problems with their uppers.  Will the Agravic Flow 2 break the string?

Saucony Endorphin Speed Initial Video Review: Shoe Details, Ride, Fit, A/B Comparison Run to Speed 2

Video by Sam Winebaum

Saucony Endorphin Speed 3 ($160)

In the video, I detail the tech and features, discuss fit and ride, and reach some early conclusions for the Endorphin Speed 3. It is a significant update on the same 36/28 stack height platform but with new geometry and a new plate design. My first run was an A/B with the Endorphin Speed 2 on my other foot and in the video I closely compare the two.

It weighs exactly the same as Speed 2 at 7.76 oz /220 g in my US8.5 samples. It gets a wider heel base, new winged nylon plate, new outsole, and a new upper. I am finding that so far it is slightly softer, with a more stable, more flexible and easier flowing if less snappy aggressive ride and has a more comfortably fitting (and roomier) upper, becoming a yet more versatile option for up tempo and now daily training for more runners.

Available August 2022. $160
