New Balance FuelCell Prism Initial Review, Shoe Details and Comparisons

Article by Sam Winebaum, Editor

New Balance FuelCell Prism ($120)
In the video I take the New Balance FuelCell Prism releasing July for a first hilly 5.7 mile / 9.5km run in Park City, Utah and share my first run impressions, shoe details, and some comparisons.
At approximately 8.1 oz /230 g (US9) based on our sample the Prism is a 6mm drop light road trainer with a softer FuelCell midsole with a medial post for some support.
It has plenty of rubber outsole for durability and some response, and a thin more relaxed and very breathable engineered mesh upper.
It provides a new and I think potentially very versatile and light option for daily training, tempo workouts, and longer races for both runners who favor support shoes and more neutral ones.Full multi tester review soon!

Hi Sam,
being only about 0,5oz heavier and the same 6mm drop, how does the Prism compare in fit and ride to the Beacon 2? I enjoy the Beacon, but only up to about 10 miles, anything more and it feels dead.
Also, how is the in-sole in the Prism? NB have been producing some great shoes in the last couple of years but many of them have had very thin and sub standard in-soles. Sure, they can be swapped out for something a bit more substantial but that tends to compromise the volume and fit of the shoe.

How does this compare to the FuelCell Rebel?

I personally didn’t run Rebels but some of the other testers for our upcoming review did. By stats Rebel is 1oz lighter and has TPU forefoot plate. the lower stack Rebel clearly leans more racer up tempo while Prism towards trainer.

My girlfriend is looking for a replacement for her Epic Reacts as a lightweight daily trainer. I've suggested Beacons and Rincons, would these be appropriate? Anything else to consider?

Hi Tom,
In Nike for sure have her take a look at the Pegasus 37. Heavier yes but a super fine shoe. In NB take a look at FuelCell Propel and upcoming Prism. In ASICS the Novablast and in Saucony Ride 13 and maybe Endorphin Speed. Salomon Sonic 3 Accelerate another solid choice
