Leki Ultratrail FX.One Trail Running Poles Review

Article by Jeff Valliere

Leki Ultratrail FX.One Trail Running Poles ($220)

Introduction:

The UltraTrail FX.One is an ultralight 4 section carbon running pole designed for fast trail running/racing, weighing in at a scant 159 grams/5.6 oz per pole in my size 115cm (178g/6.25 with Shark strap) and fold down to just 15”.

The UltraTrail FX One also features the Trail Shark grip/strap system that very easily detaches/attaches the strap to the top of the pole for maximum ease and versatility.  This pole is not quite as light as the Superlite version that Mike Postaski reviewed here  but are more durable with a 16mm thick shaft, vs. 14mm for the Superlite.

The Superlite is ideal for all out uphills where weight saving is paramount, but the few extra grams for this more sturdy version is the most practical/logical choice for most.

Features/Details/Specs:

The Ultratrail FX One features Leki’s Trail Shark grips that are lightweight and also channel air. The construction also provides exceptional power transfer for increased propulsion on the uphills or whenever needed and the grip easily clicks/in/clicks-out on the fly with a press of the thumb. The straps are lightweight and sweat absorbing for optimum comfort and control.

The straps are breathable, light, well structured and will fit a wide range of hand sizes.  They are very secure for really putting down force on the pole for uphill propulsion.

Engage the strap, slide the white loop on the strap between the thumb and forefinger into the slot on the pole and it snaps in with a positive click.

To release, simply press the red button to release the strap.  This is particularly fast and handy when you need to put away the poles quickly, or, just simply free you hand for eating, picture taking or accessing gear.

The cork grip is very grippy and durable (9” long).

At first glance, it appears that the pole is divided into thirds, but the upper section is telescoping (accounting for the 4th section) that extends and then clicks into place.

To release, simply depress the metal button, which will allow the top section to telescope back down and the lower sections to fold.

The cord holding the sections together is very durable and sheathed to reduce wear.

Folded, they are just 15” in length and exceptionally compact, easily stuffing into/onto running vests, run belts, backpacks, etc….  Being so light, they feel like nothing extra really to bring along.

The carbon shaft is light and stiff and the light pole ensures a very low swing weight and accurate pole plants.

The pole tips are concave for excellent bite and made of carbide for very good durability.  The “baskets” are very small for keeping the weight low, so they do not help much in the snow, but do help prevent the pole from sinking too easily into soft ground, mud and more compacted snow/frozen surfaces. They are not swappable for larger baskets but are replaceable.

Performance/Conclusions:

Leki really has running poles (and poles in general) mastered and the Ultratrail FX.One offers the utmost performance, with exceptionally well crafted construction, easy folding/extension, a compact design and the super handy and secure Trail Shark grip system.

I find these poles best suited for fast uphills because of the light weight and for long distance outings where you are either using the poles the entire time (the lightness reduces arm fatigue), or runs/hikes where you may only be using them for certain sections, like long uphills, but you want a pole that you can stow away with minimal weight/bulk.  The swing weight is low and they are easy to maneuver/place and they are quite stiff with minimal flex.

After using the Trail Shark grip system, I cannot imagine going back to “normal” straps, as I have become so spoiled having such positive power transfer, comfort and easy in/out.  These are far and away the lightest, most compact and capable running poles I have used and while traditionally I am not much into utilizing poles on trail runs, I am incorporating them into my longer mountain runs with lots of vertical to help support myself and take pressure off of my dodgy back on long ascents.  I highly recommend them!

Ultra Trail Storm Shark Gloves

Sizes XS-XXL

$120

The Ultra Trail Storm Shark Gloves are the perfect companion to the Ultratrail FX.One poles.  They work with the Trail Shark system as I described above by clicking into the pole mechanism using the Trigger Loop that is securely sewn in.  Of course you can wear gloves under the included trail shark strap, but the Storm Shark gloves are incredibly convenient and handy for those chilly pre dawn runs or adventures above treeline.  They are lightweight, soft, comfortable and flexible, with a second skin feel.

The palm features high quality AX suede with additional silicone sections to enhance grip.

The fingers are touch screen compatible and the tips reinforced with some extra silicone for grip and durability.

Another key feature is the integrated/stowable over mitt for added weather protection.

The outer mitt stows in the pocket along the cuff of the glove (between the velcro strap of the glove and my wrist watch).

The over mitt is easy to slide out of the pocket and put back in.

The mitt offers a nice bit of added protection when it is cold, windy or precipitating.  While they offer added protection and warmth, they are by no means a winter glove and best suited for the 40-60 degree range.

They are a very worthwhile addition to the Leki poles.
