Best Road Running Shoes of 2024: 55 Shoes in the Mix! Multiple Categories including Brand and Shoe of the Year!

Article by Peter Stuart, Ben David, Markus Zinkl, Renee Krusemark, Ryan Eiler, , Nils Scharff, Jeremy Marie, Adam Glueck, Michael Ellenberger, Sally Reiley, Sam Winebaum, Marcel Krebs

Best Road Running Shoes of 2024

Our annual survey of the year’s best road and trail running shoes, apparel and gear is compiled via survey of our contributors.12 contributors participated in this year's road running shoes survey. Over 50 models were scored either first, second or third in their respective categories

Multiple categories were surveyed,  including: Daily Trainer, Workouts/Short Races, “Fun Runner”, Max Cushion Plated and Max Cushion Unplated, Easy Days, Half and Full Marathon Racer, Biggest Surprises: Good and Bad, Overall Shoe of the Year, and Brand of the Year.

Some clear trends emerged:

  • The overall shoe of the year and brand of the year were essentially won with 2 uptempo trainer to racer shoes from the same brand.

  • With very few exceptions all midsoles were either entirely or mostly supercritical foams. EVA is gone!

  • Stack heights increased due to lighter weight and more energetic supercritical foams as super max cushion trainers increasingly were favored for non speed days

  • Nike’s dominance in the super marathon/ half marathon racer category came to an end.

Pull up a chair, beer or coffee and dig in to what the team enjoyed running  in 2024.

Not all contributors received every product and for each shoe tested differing quantities were provided by brands. Generally, New Balance, Saucony, ASICS, Hoka and Nike provided the most samples with adidas fewer.  Most shoes discussed here were no charge review samples although a considerable number of personal purchases are included.

RoadTrailRun contributors and RoadTrailRun were not compensated by brands beyond free samples. RoadTrailRun does not engage in sponsored content articles, brand compensated activations or other such events, or engage in any paid consulting with brands.

Most categories were scored on the basis of 3 points for a #1 pick, 2 points for a #2 pick and 1 point for a #3 pick

What were your Favorite Regular, No Big Frills Everyday Daily Trainers of 2024

Peter Stuart

1:21 half

361 Eleos:  By far my favorite daily trainer this year. Well over 600 miles on it and still going strong. It's comfortable, rides smooth and is open to a little tempo if you need it to be. No shoe I reached for more this year.  2. Mizuno Neo Vista. Not quite as stable or practical as the Eleos, but a fun shoe to run in.

Ben David

1:30 half

Brooks Glycerin Max - super fun, super easy with just a touch of pop, never cumbersome or clunky (followed by Asica Superblast 2 and NovaBlast 5)

Markus Zinkl

Mainly trail but also road 39:48 10K

1. New Balance Rebel v4: It really can do it all from slow sessions to fast intervals. Also a really fun shoe, a joy to run and amazing design.

2. Nike Vomero 17: Kind of an underrated Nike shoe IMO this year. Due to a good outsole works also great on easy trails.

Renee Krusemark

1:31 half, 3:26 full

I complained about the wider platform of the New Balance Rebel v4, but it’s still my favorite with its low weight and preppy midsole. Second place to the upcoming Novablast v5 for its now narrower platform and lower weight. Third place to the light and speedy Brooks Hyperion 2.

Ryan Eiler

2:13 PR 2024 NYC Marathon

Mizuno Neo Vista - Innovative, bold design, playful ride. The knit upper combines with a very lively upper to provide a less-serious option for easy days.

ASICS Glideride Max - Despite its ho-hum ride, it is supremely comfortable, well suited for high mileage, and beautifully stable under foot.

Nils Scharff

1:17:29 half

16:59 5K

1. ASICS Novablast 4 - I've put almost 3x more miles into the NB4 than in any other shoe this year. I think this speaks for itself.

2. adidas Supernova Prima - Comfy, protecting & smoothly rolling. Everything you want in a milage eater.

Jeremy Marie

2:54 full

Hylo Impact. Sustainability-driven, comfort, nice and natural to run in

2nd: Altra FWD Flow: a nice evolution for 0-drop brand. SImple design, nice foam, good fit, versatile.

3rd: ON Cloudflow 4: low to the ground, "old feeling" shoe, in a good way.

(all are review samples)

Adam Glueck

1st:  New Balance Rebel V4:  This unplated shoe has a fabulously light and responsive PEBA foam, feels good at slow or fast paces, incredibly versatile.  When packing a pair of shoes to run on a two week business trip these were the first ones I’d grab.

2nd:  Brooks Hyperion 2.0.  I was a big fan of the original brooks Hyperion, and this new update was a big improvement for me.  I appreciated the energy return and direct feel of the shoe while still being comfortable over longer distances.  My favorite feature of this shoe is versatility for distance, short, easy, and hard running, with a touch more stability than the Rebel V4.

Michael Ellenberger

2:21 full, 1:07 half

Nike Pegasus Plus (review and personal purchase - I’ve got two pairs!). Absolute joy of an everyday trainer. Honorable mention to Atreyu Base Model 3, which made small but effective changes, and Diadora Frequenza.

Sally Reiley

3:24 full

ASICS Novablast 4

#2 NB Rebel 4

#3 TOPO Specter 2

Sam Winebaum

Maybe a sub 1:40 half these days if I am very very lucky!

1. Diadora Nucleo 2 or Cellula are my top picks in the category. Both feature DD Anima foam, with the new Nucleo somewhat higher stacked and more stability focused. Both have lively, very impact absorbing rides and made my regular nothing fancy runs big smiles ones.

2. The Adizero Supernova Prima takes a more measured approach with a supercritical foam midsole, great inherent stability and a lively safe ride.

3d. 361 Eleos made any run easy and fun. Big smiles from its TPEE foam midsole which is the liveliest out there.

Marcel Krebs

1:27 half

3:13 full

1.) TOPO Specter V2: Great combination of a roomy toe boox and good mid- and rearfoot lockdown. Midsole well balanced between stability and responsiveness; pretty versatile as a daily trainer as well as a good long run option in a light package with a breathable upper.

2.) HOKA Mach 6: Light, responsive and versatile; also available in a wide option.

3.) ASICS Novablast 4: Light, responsive and stable - also one of the top daily trainers of the year

Duel between the Rebel v4 (RTR Review) and Novablast  (RTR Review) with the Rebel winning with 10 total points to the Novablast’s 8 points. The Topo Specter 2 (RTR Review) follows with 5 points with the Supernova Prima (RTR Review) and Hyperion 2 (RTR Review) getting 4 points each..

What were your Favorite Tempo, Speed, Shorter Races and Workouts Shoe of 2024?

Peter Stuart

New Balance Rebel V4 Also a contender for daily trainer, but likes to go fast on any given day. Super fun, very light, comfortable, and can handle long miles. A good marathon race choice for many people too. Hoka Mach 6 is a close second here.

Ben David

Nike Zoom Fly 6 followed by the Saucony Endorphin Speed 4 - revamped and speedy, runs light and nimble

Markus Zinkl

1. New Balance Pacer v2: This one is a bit more forgiving than my second place pick the Adidas Takumi Sen 10. For my workouts I usually do some other slower miles before and after. The Pacer v2 can do those with ease as wall as the actual workout sections.

2. Adidas Takumi Sen 10: If the category would only call for a Shorter Races shoe, this would be my pick. It is a race machine only, whereas the Pacer is better suited for mixed in Tempo and Speed workouts.

Renee Krusemark

For non-plated options, the Brooks Hyperion 2 because the subtle rocker and light weight + good ground feel are a nice change from the higher stack options. The Rebel v4 is just great for everything, and if I really want some ground feel, the Topo Cyclone v2.

Ryan Eiler

ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris - One of the lowest inertia shoes I've ever worn, turnover is snappy and the shoe's rigidity screams performance.

Brooks Hyperion Elite 4 - This is the first version of the Hyperion Elite that I've been impressed by. On the firmer side for a super shoe, but it encourages a quick transition and feels very light on foot.

Nils Scharff

1.adidas Takumi Sen 10 - Aggressive, fast, good lockdown, great traction. You can't ask for more if you want to let it rip.

2. New Balance SC Pacer v2 - A slightly less aggressive and heavy, but more stable and comfortable Takumi. Probably the better choice for the most of us.

Jeremy Marie

New Balance SC Pacer v2: light, responsive, grippy, nice fit for me.

2nd: On CloudBoom Echo 3: very reactive, stable, a lack of durability so better for races.

3rd: Nike Pegasus Plus: stable, fast, comfortable for long miles, with that bit of firmness that I like.

(review samples for all)

Adam Glueck

1st: Salomon S/Lab Phantasm 2:  This is a plated super shoe, PEBA foam and high stack height.  I reason I’ve enjoyed it for tempo and shorter workouts is that the shoe is slightly firmer with more stability.  I’ve enjoyed that responsiveness for fast miles and track workouts, yet it still feels like it has the efficiency and cushion if I do decide to push longer.

2nd: New Balance SC Pacer V2:  The SC pacer V2 is a big improvement on the original pacer for me, featuring both a light and responsive PEBA foam and stiff and responsive plate.  This wasn’t a shoe I enjoyed at longer distances or slower speeds, the plate needs energy to transition through strides, but for track work, faster running, and speed work, it was excellent.

Michael Ellenberger

Nike Alphafly 3 takes what worked in the Vaporfly line (for shorter races, especially) and blends it into the Alphafly line. I’m a huge fan.

Sally Reiley

NIKE Zoom Fly 6! - disappears on my foot and feels fun and fast

#2 Saucony Endorphin Speed 4

#3 HOKA Mach X 2 ((with reservations about unpadded heel)

Sam Winebaum

1) The great value Noosa Tri 16 keeps things simple and fast with a single density FF Blast Plus midsole rockered ride, mini max stack height, low weight and value price. 2) Nike's Pegasus Plus is light, high drop and Zoom X powered. A more traditional riding shoe with a fairly thin forefoot it can tackle anything you throw at it from daily training to tempos, to racing. Its upper is all performance business.

3) New Balance's Pacer v2 stays clear of max stack height and focuses on speed and turnover with light weight, some flex even if carbon plated and a great sense of agility for a carbon shoe.

Marcel Krebs

1.) ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris: An incredibly light and bouncy racer which favors a higher cadence

2.) ON Running Cloudboom Strike LS: Very balanced and responsive ride; incredibly light; rocker easy to hit and therefore favorable for a lot of running styles; Awesome and innovative fit. Comes with a hefty price tag though, even for a "super shoe".

2.) HOKA Rocket X2: Another great option for shorter distances; offers a more responsive than bouncy ride and a stable platform.

New Balance SC Pacer v2  (RTR Review) wins the category with 11 points followed by the ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris (RTR Review) with 6 points with the adizero Takumi Sen 10 (RTR Review) and Endorphin Speed 4 (RTR Review) tying with 5 points each.

The Pacer v2 has all the “goodies” of a full on marathon carbon racer but has a lower stack height thus allowing it to be more flexible and agile, so great for shorter races and workouts. Its stack height is in fact closer to the original wave of super shoes than more recent ones that go the full legal WA 40mm heel height. And yes, it can be a marathon shoe too as it is Em Sisson, US marathon record holder shoe of choice. The Takumi Sen 10 and Endorphin Speed 4 also share many of the same characteristics as the Pacer.

What were your Favorite Plated Max (>40mm) or Mini Max (34-40mm) Trainers of 2024?

Peter Stuart

1. Hoka Cielo X  Most fluid, stable and efficient racer for me. Fun race day and tempo trainer. 2. Neo Vista

Ben David

New Balance SuperComp Trainer V3 - felt like the NB super trainer we've been waiting for, sturdy, responsive, light and quick (with a nod to Diadora Gara Carbon which I LOVED and the Hoka Mach X2)

Markus Zinkl

1. New Balance SC Trainer v3. I didn't run in to many other max. plated trainer, but the SC Trainer has all I would expect. Plenty of cushion, a little kick from the plate later on in my runs and enough stability for a big slab of cushion.

Renee Krusemark

In terms of trainers, I don’t usually like to wear a plated shoe, but the Hoka Cielo X1 is a great option for back to back long runs. For shorter workouts, the New Balance Pacer 2 and the Saucony Speed 4.

Ryan Eiler

ASICS Magicspeed 4 - The taller stack in this version still manages to deliver adequate stability and plenty of cushion for a reasonable price. A capable performer for speedwork without a nosebleed price tag.

Adam Glueck

1st:  Diadora Gara Carbon:  This shoe was incredibly comfortable, easy to turn over at a variety of paces, but with enough energy return to not feel slow or inefficient on easier days.  While it could be a fast race shoe or versatile for a tempo run, I enjoyed it for easier mileage when I didn’t want to slow down, and to enjoy the efficiency benefits or carbon plates and PEBA foams.

Michael Ellenberger

Mizuno Neo Vista! A surprise hit from a brand with a lot of hits, and a lot of misses. Seriously cool technology.

Dom Layfield

Altra Vanish Carbon 2. I've been using this shoe pretty much exclusively for all my road runs, and have been highly impressed. It's light, fast, and comfortable. Hard to fault, except for the steep price. I've even found it works well on trails, and would seriously consider this shoe for off road racing.

Sally Reiley

#1 HOKA Skyward X

#2 NB SC Trainer v3

Sam Winebaum

1) ASICS Magic Speed 4 . It checks all the boxes with a weight around  8 oz, beyond legal max heel at 42.5 mm and super reasonable price of $170 for a carbon plated trainer/racer. It is stable and has a forgiving ride up front with its plate in no way harsh. Of course it likes to go fast and can be a wonderful "budget" racer but unlike others in its category of light and carbon plate is also just fine at slower paces.

2) Hoka Skyward X is the max plated for easier runs. Incredibly stable with very energetic softer foam and a highly effective carbon plate it rolls friendly ( if yes heavy) at all paces unlike its competitors and is especially fine at easy recovery paces.

3)The Mizuno Neo Vista is all about a fun run experience. Soft and bouncy its fiberglass plate keeps it from being overly soft while clearly aiding propulsion

Marcel Krebs

1.) HOKA Cielo X1: Very bouncy and so much fun! Also pretty versatile from workouts over longruns up to the marathon; the shoe I logged in the most miles in 2024!

2.) HOKA Skyward X: The perfect compliment to the Cielo X1 for recovery and easy runs. Pretty stable and not the lightest shoe, but still so much fun!

3.) New Balance SC Trainer v3: A pretty versatile option with a soft midsole and a wide base.  Quite versatile and handles everything from recovery runs up to long runs.

The Hoka Cielo X 1 (RTR Review) and New Balance SC Trainer v3 (RTR Review) dominate the category tying with 9 points each. The Hoka Skyward X (RTR Review) comes in next with 7 points with the ASICS Magic Speed 4 (RTR Review) and Mizuno Neo Vista (RTR Review) not far behind with 6 points each.

Plated trainers are clearly evolving. No longer is a plated shoe strictly a race shoe as here the foams and plate geometries make them far more training suitable.

What is your Favorite Unplated Max  (>40mm) or Mini Max  (34- 40mm) Trainers of 2024

Ben David

Brooks Glycerin Max (followed by Asics Super Blast 2) you really can't go wrong with either of these - but I find the Brooks to be a more enjoyable ride, even if a touch less snappy than the Asics. I really am excited about the Asics Nova Blast 5 as well.

Markus Zinkl

1. Brooks Glycerin Max. Brooks really surprised me this year. It basically ticks all the same boxes than the SC Trainer v3 in the plated category. More cushion you could ever want, but still a lively enough midsole foam, while also no stability issues.

2. New Balance Balos: It was a close call between the Balos and Glycerin Max. The Balos beiing a bit lighter and reactive than the Glycerin Max, but in the end the comfort and cushion of the Glycerin Max took the sport for me.

3. New Balance 1080 v14: In its 14th iteration the 1080 gained some weight and cushion in the forefoot. It is not as speedy than the Balos and not as comfortable and cushioned than the Glycerin Max. It's way better value though then my first and second pick here.

Renee Krusemark

I’ll usually elect to wear a lower stack shoe regardless, but the 361 Eleos felt like a higher stack shoe and it rolls forward easier and with good comfort.

Ryan Eiler

ASICS Glideride Max - Despite its ho-hum ride, it is supremely comfortable, well suited for high mileage, and beautifully stable under foot.

Nils Scharff

1. Topo Athletic Specter 2 - I haven't run many shoes in this category, but the Specter is a great example of how such shoes should work. A great upper, good traction and an all PEBAX midsole make for a very versatile package and a lot of fun!

Jeremy Marie

1: On Cloudmonster Hyper: high volume fit, not mushy at all, responsive, versatile

2nd: Pegasus Plus: packs a punch thanks to ZoomX foam, works well for many paces.

3rd: Diadora Frequenza : bouncy, premium build, fun. Beware those lacking stability with the softish foam.

Sally Reiley

ON CloudEclipse

NB 1080 v14

Sam Winebaum

1) Not its "intended" use which is for slower paced ultras but  the S/Lab Ultra Glide is my clear winner in the category ,  Very light at 10 oz / 285g for its 41/35 stack height and trail worthy outsole, it also features an innovative Relieve Sphere tech underfoot focused on pressure areas. I have hiked it, trail run, and run plenty of roads as well and its smooth roll, comfortable almost road shoe like upper make it outstanding there too.

2) 2025 Hoka Bondi barely over 10 oz with a lively supercritical EVA foam midsole

3) Brooks Glycerin Max

Marcel Krebs

On paper it would be

1.) ASICS Superblast v2

2.) Puma Mag Max

3.) Brooks Glycerin Max

Unfortunately, I was not able to test them yet personally. But given my positive experiences with the Superblast v1, I am pretty confident that the crown should go to v2 as well.

The new Brooks Glycerin Max  (RTR Review) was a clear favorite in the category with 8 points. No other shoe had more than 3 points. With its lively dual density co molded supercritical DNA Tuned midsole, massive cushion depth and a pronounced rocker instead of a plate it is a well tuned giant of a shoe and a big departure for Brooks.

What is your Favorite Half/Marathon Race Shoe of 2024 and Why?

Peter Stuart

Hoka Cielo X

Ben David

Asics MetaSpeed Sky Paris - so plush, so fast, so mindlessly good (followed closely by its cousin the MetaSpeed Edge Paris which to me runs just a bit harsh and then the AlphaFly 3, which never fully fit my foot right and gave me some lockdown issues, even if the ride is sublime)

Markus Zinkl

1. Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 3. It is very light and does not compromise on performance.

2. Mizuno Rebellion Pro 2. It's extreme and I don't know how it would perform over the full marathon distance. For me as a midfoot runner, the extreme heel design works great. This shoe has serious speed.

Renee Krusemark

I did not road race this year, but for half to full marathon workouts, I’m still choosing the Nike Vaporfly 3. For the marathon distance, I might prefer either the Saucony Pro 4 or New Balance SC Elite 4 just to have more under my feet.

Ryan Eiler

Adidas Adios Pro 3 - Ever since the Adios Pro v1 came out I've worn this line for racing. I think that performance-wise, v3 is the pick of the litter (EVO Pro aside). While its upper and its eyelets can be a bit finicky, and it doesn't win on comfort, the performance of the midsole is downright explosive and hard to top. I use my old pairs in training at distances as short as 1k. I prefer its superior turnover and stability as compared to the newer v4.

Adidas Adios Pro 4 - While I think they made the heel a bit too soft and slow to turn over, the rest of the shoe has very welcome upgrades. The upper is much friendlier, more comfortable, and easier to get situated. The deeper rebound of the midsole will likely win over many fans, and the outer gets more texture to handle the wet.

Asics Metaspeed Edge Paris - This shoe feels like there's barely anything attached to your foot. Despite the heel feeling a touch narrow, and the midsole having a sliver less explosiveness than the Adidas lineup, this shoe is wicked fast. I use it for my longest, hardest type of training runs on the road to save my legs and help my with turnover. The upper breathes incredibly well yet does a sufficient job of holding things in place.

Nils Scharff

1. Nike Alphafly 3 - This is my highest rated shoe of the year and second highest of all time with deductions just for the high price tag. The upper wraps my foot perfectly, the AirZoom Pods have an edge above everything else in terms of energy return, the midsole is very stable for a supershoe which I like and need in the later miles of a marathon.

2. ASICS Metaspeed Sky Paris - The Sky Paris is just a nod behind the Alphafly with the narrow heel and therefore lack of stability as the only downside. It's the lightest supershoe I've ever tested and therefore my race day shoe for 10k and HM.

Michael Ellenberger

Alphafly 3 - it maintains that same “keeps ya rolling” bounce of the Alphafly of old, and adds a little sharpness and bounce. I have 3 pairs! ASICS Metaspeed Sky #2 and Edge Paris #3 also way, way up there.

Adam Glueck

1st:  Salomon S/Lab Phantasm 2:  This shoe has efficient PEBA foam, a lovely and lightweight upper, and a plate geometry that works well with my stride.   I enjoy the slightly firmer PEBA for more responsiveness as a taller, lower cadence, and more powerful running.

2.  ASICS Metaspeed Sky:  An older shoe, but love the responsiveness of this foam for racing

Jeremy Marie

1: Salomon SLab Phantasm v2 "Made In France": comfy, bounce, grip, stability, and works perfectly for (personal purchase)

2: Puma Deviate Elite 3: one of the lightest, most natural feeling out there.

3. 361 Furious Future: A big surprise for me. A very fast shoe that sits along with Alphafly

Sally Reiley

Nike AlphaFly 3 - feels good on the foot and adds pep to my step and takes time off of my pace! Wore in NYCM 24 and splits were faster than perceived effort. #2 HOKA Cielo X1

Sam Winebaum

1) Adios Pro EVO 1  At a weight almost 50g less than the Vaporfly at the same stack height and with an incredibly comfortable, secure and minimal upper, and a very long rocker, something I prefer in carbon shoes, the EVO 1 sets a very new bar in stats, performance and...price. Zero evidence of midsole creasing or change in ride at 30 miles plus from its machined from sheets of foam midsole. My max is a half in this shoe.

2) Cloudboom Strike does away with the sockliner and lasting board adding a slip in soft and reacting 2nd midsole. The result is a deeper more energetic cushion depth within legal limits with no plate harshness upfront and a smooth marathon paces ride for me.

3) Coming for 2025 but in test now the Saucony Endorphin Elite 2. Very very soft and also very very energetic. So easy to run at any pace.

Marcel Krebs

1.) ASICS Metaspeed Sky Paris: The Sky Paris perfectly favors my running style (stride runner). It is incredibly light and bouncy and was my shoe of choice for my huge PB over the half marathon distance. Also an excellent choice over the marathon distance for well trained runners with a good running form.

2.) Nike Alphafly 3: Also very bouncy, but less agile than the Sky Paris. It is more stable especially at the heel area but therefore comes in at a higher weight. Great balance between bounce and stability.

3.) HOKA Cielo X1: Also very bouncy but quite stable at the same time. Very good choice for runners who loose form at the end of marathon like most of us regular runners do and who choose stability of the race shoe over weight optimization.

Jeff Valliere

Asics Metaspeed Sky Paris - The Sky is so light, fast, responsive and well cushioned, exactly the performance enhancement I expect from a carbon plated super shoe..

In the hotly contested half and marathon super shoe category, the Nike Alphafly 3  (RTR Review) and ASICS Metaspeed Sky Paris (RTR Review) each had 3 first place votes each, The Sky Paris with 13 points edges out the Alphafly by one point noting that for Jeff Valliere it was his only tested super shoe. That is before considering the 5 points for the closely related Metaspeed Edge Paris (RTR Review) and points for the older Metaspeed Sky while Nike’s Vaporfly 3  (RTR Review) got 3 points.

It is clear, and in a big change from prior years, that overall, the ASICS Metaspeed Paris racers moved slightly ahead of Nike’s race offerings in 2024 with for the first time in the super shoe era, another brand challenging the Swoosh’s race dominance for our testers. Here is what the results were in 2023:

The Nike Vaporfly 3 runs away with this category with 6 votes, plus 2 votes for the Vaporfly 2. New Balance SC Elite v3 comes in next with 3 votes followed by the ASICS Metaspeed Sky + with two votes.”

What is your Favorite Easy & Recovery Runs Shoe of 2024 and Why?

Ben David

Brooks Glycerin Max (comfortable, easygoing, great upper and feel), followed by the ASICS NovaBlast 5 and On Cloud Eclipse

Markus Zinkl

1. Brooks Glycerin Max

2. NB Balos

3. NB 1080v14

Renee Krusemark

The ASICS Novablast v5 updated exactly what I needed: a lower weight with a less clunky heel. Much like the Novablast, the Rebel v4 is a shoe I can use for easy runs along with most other types of runs. And despite having a plate, the Hoka Cielo X1 is a great option for long back to back runs when I need something extra underfoot to keep shuffling.

Ryan Eiler

Mizuno Neo Vista - Innovative, bold design, playful ride. There's so much cushion here that I never feel beat up after a 90 minute run on asphalt. The knit upper combines with a very lively upper to provide a less-serious option for easy days.

Nils Scharff

adidas Supernova Prima - This category kind of doubles for me with the daily trainers. But I would probably switch places because the adidas Supernova Prima is the more protective of the two.

Michael Ellenberger

Nike Invincible Run 3 - it needs an upper update, but it’s still a joy for true recovery runs. ASICS Superblast ain’t bad, either. Bouncy!

Adam Glueck

1st. Diadora Gara Carbon.  I enjoyed that this shoe had a comfortable upper, responsive foam, and ran efficiently while feeling really good at easier paces

Jeremy Marie

1st: Brooks Ghost Max v1: sounds like a dull choice, but I actually like it. A lot. Not mushy, comfy, durable.

Sally Reiley

Brooks Glycerin Max

NB 1080 v14

Sam Winebaum

1) Skyward X, no real contest here. The Skyward is soft and bouncy with a big smiles pace at slower paces and is highly stable at the same time, just what I look for in such a shoe. Yes it's heavy but all the weight and big platform all around never gets in the way and keeps paces easier just when they should be.

2) The Diadora Nucleo is unplated with a single slab of highly energetic, very shock vibration absorbing DD Anima foam, its secret sauce. Its geometry gives it never in the way light stability, something I look for in recovery paces type shoes.

3) Supernova Prima is steady, stable and reliable. Great for easy recovery runs its PEBA blend midsole has decent excitement, its upper hold is impeccable and it has great grip.

Marcel Krebs

1.) HOKA Skyward-X for the before-mentioned reasons: soft, bouncy and still stable; brings the fun even to easy runs.

2.) Saucony Triumph 20/21: Still one of my favorites in this category. While the T22 was underwhelming, T20 and T21 are still great options for logging in the miles during recovery and easy runs as well as slower long runs.

The Brooks Glycerin Max  (RTR Review) wins with 9 points with the Hoka Skyward X (RTR Review) following with 6 points and with the Novablast coming in 3d with 5 points. Both are massively cushioned but take a different approach as the Hoka is carbon plated and the Brooks relies on a pronounced front rocker.

What is your Favorite "Fun Runner" of 2024 and Why?

Peter Stuart

On Cloudmonster

Ben David

I had a lot of fun running this year in the Adidas Supernova Prima, which gives an almost surprisingly smooth ride with its 37mm stack and gentle toe-off (followed by the highly reliable On Cloud Eclipse, which is - to me - the best On shoe out there still)

Markus Zinkl

1. New Balance Rebel v4. Light, bouncy, versatile with a great fit. Just a joy to run in.

2. Brooks Hyperion Max 2. Probably the best fitting shoe for me of 2024.

3. New Balance Balos. This lightweight with so much cushion is impressive. Combined with the bouncy midsole makes it just fun.

Renee Krusemark

The NB Rebel v4 and ASICS Novablast v5. I listed both shoes in several categories.

Ryan Eiler

Mizuno Neo Vista

Nils Scharff

Well.. racing is fun, right? So if I'm thinking which runs I enjoyed the most this year it probably comes down to my super shoe choices. For unplated shoes again the Novablast 4 gave me a lot of smiles this year!

Jeremy Marie

1. Diadora Frequenza: nice foot hold, much bounce, light...

2: Hylo Impact: same flavor as the Diadora, but more stable, firmer (no way firm), a bit less fun, but still fun nonetheless !

Adam Glueck

Same answer for me as my everyday run shoes ) I like to have fun when I run everyday.

1.  New Balance Rebel V4.  Great upper, unplated trainer, responsive foam

2.  Brooks Hyperion 2.  Great upper, responsive foam, slightly more stable than the New Balance, great versatility

Michael Ellenberger

Pegasus Plus, Neo Vista, Superblast 2

Sally Reiley

NB Rebel 4, TOPO Specter 2

Sam Winebaum

1) 361 Eleos has the most exciting training foam (TPEE) of any 2024 shoe. Fairly low in stack height but broad on the ground, any shorter run is big fun in this shoe

2) 2025 Miuzuno Mystery Shoe 01 high stacked, very light, super bouncy yet stable. Big smiles here

3) Adizero SL 2 Serious fun are the words that come to mind. Moderately stacked with a core of supercritical Lightstrike Pro foam, the reasonably priced SL 2 has a more traditional ride feel and is ready for just about anything and especially faster. Its more extensive outsole has more grip than the others  and it has a more performance oriented fit.

Marcel Krebs

HOKA Cielo X1 (plated) for the before-mentioned reasons: Very bouncy and so much fun! Also pretty versatile from workouts over long runs up to the marathon; the shoe I logged in the most miles in 2024!

No real contest here as the Rebel v4 (RTR Review) gets 12 points with the Novablast 4 or 5  (RTR Review) getting 6 points and the Mizuno Neo Vista (RTR Review)  4 points. All three are seriously fun!

What were the most surprisingly Good and Bad road shoes of 2024.

Peter Stuart

Mizuno Neo Vista was a nice surprise.  NB SC Trainer 3 was a disappointment for me as was the Hoka Mach X2 (great ride, upper caused all sorts of problems).

Ben David

I so wanted to love the NB Balos but found it way too mushy and soft. As for the good, I was nervous that Asics would ruin the Super Blast but not only did they not ruin it, I think it's an even better shoe). I also LOVED the Asics Tri Noosa 16.

Markus Zinkl

Brooks Hyperion Max 2: I didn't expect much from Brooks' road shoes, so this one was a big surprise for me. It's not the best in any criteria, but overall ticks a lot of boxes for me.

Renee Krusemark

The Hoka Ciele X1 was a so-so rated shoe for me. It’s an expensive shoe and heavy for a racer. However, I wore it a lot while training for the Bighorn 52 and found it great for my second back to back run, when I was two 25+ milers. The more the midsole wore down, the better it was for me on the gravel roads.

Ryan Eiler

Positive surprise: Brooks Hyperion Elite 4 - I feel like this is the first competitive super shoe that Brooks has produced. Low inertia, quicker to turn over than most other super shoes.

Negative Surprise: Hoka Cielo X1 - Way too heavy, too rockered, and not properly fitting. This one was a miss from a company that I expect much better from.

Nils Scharff

Good: adidas Supernova family

 Bad: ON Cloudmonster 2

Jeremy Marie

Good:Salomon S/Lab Phantasm 2: I did not expect Salomon to come out with such a good road race shoe.

- Diadora Frequenza: did not wait much from the brand, but the Frequenza caught me off guard. Flexible, bouncy, cushioned, fun !

Adam Glueck

Surprisingly Good:  Brooks Hyperion 2:  I liked the original tempo, but I was surprised how much adding a little stack height to this shoe improved it.  It still has great ground feel and responsiveness while allowing it to work for me over longer distances.

Surprisingly Bad:  Saucony Kinvara 15:  I tend to really enjoy Saucony shoes, and the Kinvara 15 has a lot of what I like.  The upper is fantastic, the shoe is light and comfortable, and I like other shoes within the category of lightweight unplated trainers. I found the foam unresponsive and underwhelming, and although it’s a perfectly competent and enjoyable shoe, I never found myself reaching for it over the competition.

Michael Ellenberger

Good - Mizuno Neo Vista!

Bad - Brooks Revel 7. That line used to be “surprisingly fun! Low price” but there are much more fun, similarly affordable options. This needs a reboot.

Sally Reiley

Good: Diadora Frequenza - loved it after negative experiences with previous shoes from this brand

Bad: Craft Pacer - managed one run only, felt like (yuck)

Sam Winebaum

Good:  S/Lab UltraGlide and Hoka Skyward X and now the shockingly lighter and totally runnable 2025 Bondi 9, Any shoe with TPE or eTPU foam  Hylo Impact with a leading percentage of sustainable materials proved that a more sustainable shoe can also be fun to run, decentlh light  and as good as more conventional built shoes.                         Not so Good: Hoka Mach X2, Sky Flow both surprisingly firm and dull for supercrtical foam shoes

Marcel Krebs

Good: ON Running Cloudboom Strike LS. While ON Running is ramping up their running shoe game for the second year in a row, the Cloudboom Strike LS put a cherry on the top of that. The 3D printed sock-like upper is a real innovation and offers an surprisingly awesome fit! I can also clearly see this as a first step to customized fits for running shoes. The Strike LS is also incredibly light and offers a well balanced ride with an easy to hit rocker. The price clearly reflects an innovation and first mover premium but this has seldomly hindered success in the running shoe game like adidas shoes with the EVO Pro 1.

Bad: Saucony Triumph 22; Saucony really won me over with the introduction of the Endorphin line four years ago. Endorphin Speed 1&3 are even among my favorite daily trainers of all time. While not being an official member of teh Endo lineup, the Endorphin Pro and Speed have been a great match-up with the Triumph which made up a great and versatile non-plated option for recovery and easy runs as well as long runs. It offered a responsive and stable ride and was a staple in my shoe rotation from the T19 up to the T21. With the T22, Saucony clearly positioned the Triumph as a pure recovery and walking shoe. This makes sense to a certain extent to establish some differentiation to the Ride. Nonetheless, the ride of the T22 is quite uninspired and I would love to see a competitor from Saucony to the Superblast from ASICS or the Skyward X  from HOKA to bring back some innovation to the Saucony lineup. The Endorphin Elite 2 looks pretty promising - so maybe it will be a great kick-off for 2025.

What is your Overall Best Road Run Shoe of 2024

Peter Stuart

1. 361 Eleos. 2. NB Rebel V4

Ben David

MetaSpeed Sky Paris (with a nod to the On Cloud Eclipse, Brooks Glycerin Max and Super Blast 2)

Markus Zinkl

1. New Balance SC Trainer v3: Most versatile and fun shoe on the roads this year for me.

2. New Balance Pacer v2: Finally find my workout shoe, which can do easy miles too.

3. New Balance Balance Venym: Didn't expect this one this year and didn't disappoint.

Renee Krusemark

Rebel v4, SC Elite v4, and Cielo X 1

Ryan Eiler

Adidas Adios Pro 3 - I've been a superfan of the Adios Pro line ever since v1, and I think that performance-wise, v3 is the pick of the litter. While its upper can be a bit finicky, the performance of the midsole is downright explosive and hard to top. I prefer its superior  turnover and stability as compared to the never v4.

Adidas Adios Pro 4 - This version gets a noticeable softer heel, but still provides deadly performance. Explosive energy return, improved upper comfort, and a midsole that is highly protective makes for a world class racing shoe, although not quite as tenacious as v3. It's also just a ton of fun to bounce around in.

Nils Scharff

1. ASICS Novablast 4 - I've run 3x as much in this than in an any other shoe this year. Whenever I have nothing to test or just want to feel comfy & confident I take the NB4!

2. Nike Alphafly 3 - This has to be on that list as I had my best running day ever at the Berlin Marathon in this shoe. A 7 min PB, a negative split and not a  single blister or ache on my feet - amazing!

Jeremy Marie

1. S/Lab Phantasm 2. 2. Nike Pegasus Plus

Adam Glueck

1st: New Balance Rebel V4:  I love the versatility of this shoe, without compromising

2rd: Salomon S/Lab Phantasm 2

Michael Ellenberger

1. Nike Pegasus Plus

2. ASICS Metaspeed Sky Paris (I’d say Sky and Edge both, in this spot)

3. Mizuno Neo Vista

Sally Reiley

Nike AF3/Zoom Fly 6 combo for racing and training is tops in my book

HOKA Cielo X1

On Cloud Eclipse

Sam Winebaum

ASICS Magic Speed 4 (versatile, light, fairly priced carbon trainer racer) ,

Salomon S/Lab Ultra Glide (any terrain including and especially  road)

Adios Pro EVO 1 (the ultimate in hyper light racing)

Marcel Krebs

1.) ASICS Metaspeed Sky Paris: Excellent choice for race days - a very light and bouncy shoe for races up to the marathon distance and quite durable as well.

2.) HOKA Cielo X1: Also a great race day option when you are looking for a combination of bounce and stability even though it is not as light as other options. In any case it is an awesome choice for faster training sessions and long runs.

3.) HOKA Skyward-X: Perfectly complements the Cielo X1 in your rotation. Covers everything from recovery runs to long runs. Soft, bouncy and still stable because of the wide platform.

The Metaspeed Sky Paris and Rebel v4 tie for first with 7 points each including for both two first place votes with the Alphafly 3, Cielo X 1, Pegasus Plus, On Cloud Eclipse and Salomon S/Lab Phantasm 2 each getting 5 points.

Most Mentioned Road Running Shoes

55 road shoes were called out in positives across all the categories.

The  New Balance Rebel v4  wins with 13 mentions

While it did not win any single category, the 2nd most mentioned shoe, in a tie with the Cielo X 1 was the exciting fun to run, and it seems by the survey results versatile across many categories, Mizuno Neo Vista (RTR Review) with 10 mentions. The Brooks Glycerin Max had 9 mentions demonstrating yet again the emergence of super max cushion trainers in 2024

Most 1st Place Votes across all categories

The New Balance Rebel v4 wins on this basis with 10 first place votes! It is followed by the Brooks Glycerin Max with 5 votes and the ASICS Novablast with 5 votes.

What is your overall favorite Road Run Brand of 2024 and Why?

Peter Stuart

Hoka for several great shoes. Tracksmith for great half tights.

Ben David

I'm excited that Brooks has the courage to reinvent itself after all these years. Hoka continues to push the envelope. I'm eager to see the next iterations of their race shoes. I'm hoping Nike can 'bounce back' with a VaporFly 4 that is as exciting as the 1 and 2 were.

Markus Zinkl

1. New Balance: Probably the best overall lineup this year.

2. Puma: Solid as always

3. Hoka: Back after some disappointing years.

Renee Krusemark

1: New Balance, 2: Saucony, 3: ASICS

Ryan Eiler

Adidas - The racing shoe lineup is hard to beat, and their Adizero line of apparel is top quality with a great, race-worthy fit

ASICS - Did a nice job of making minor adjustments to what has been working (Glideride Max), injecting excitement and refinement to others (Superblast, Metaspeed), and making some bold changes elsewhere (Magic Speed).

Saucony - There's very little weakness in the lineup of Triumph, Ride, Kinvara, Endorphin Speed, and now the Endorphin Elite. Saucony again proves to be a true runner's brand, making the right changes for the right reasons.

Nils Scharff

1. Even if I haven't tested their latest releases like the Adios Pro 4 and EVO SL all of the shoes I tried were good or great. You just can't go wrong with the adidas three stripes at the moment.

2. ASICS - Novablast, Superblast, Metaspeed Sky & Edge Paris. That's all you need if you are a serious runner and those are one of the best shoes of their respective categories. For ASICS it's just that you and your stride need to fit to the respective shoe and that's not as easy as with some other brands. E.g. this years Nimbus just felt clunky for me or the Metaspeeds are just not stable enough for me to go all the way to the end of a marathon. Nonetheless ASICS deserves to be on this list and also surprises me again and again with great run clothes for reasonable prices!

Jeremy Marie

1. New Balance. I still don't really get why this brand lacks...fanciness? Or sex-appeal ? Or maybe that a European distorted perception and it's different in the US. But they have one of the best "super shoes" lineup with the three musketeers SC Elite v4, SC Pacer V2, SC Trainer v3, and still offer the Rebel v4.

2. ON: maybe not the brand that put "The Best shoe" out there during 2024, but the brand that, I think, progresses the most. The Cloudsurfer linemarks a departure from their roots, and the new supershoes are either really good (CB Strike) or completely innovative CB Strike LS.

3. Nike: I'm almost disappointed to put the big Swoosh in this list as it might sound a bit of an easy choice but...for road running, they still manage to put out some really great shoes. I think what puts them in my list is the Pegasus Plus, a shoe I've never expected from Nike. Simple, great foam, good fit, no thrills... and you still got the super duet AF3/VF3 should you want to take it up to 11.

Adam Glueck

1.  New Balance: With the switch to PEBA for a lot of their road shoes, new Balance has really improved the performance and versatility of their products for me.

2nd.  Salomon:  with the S/Lab Phantasm V2 being such a refined road shoe, it really rounds out Salomon’s product range for both road and trail.

Michael Ellenberger

Michael Patrick Ellenberger

1. ASICS

2. Nike

3. Mizuno

Sally Reiley

HOKA Cielo X1, Skyward X, Mach X 2, all  FUN to run in

New Balance has solid entries in many categories, SC Trainer used to be my #1 and still a contender

Sam Winebaum

adidas: for extensive if sometimes quantity limited almost complete revamp of every part of their line up: EVO 1, SL 2, SL EV0, Adiios Pro 4, Supernova  Prima, they even made Ultraboost 5X a totally road training worthy shoe and this all before 3 great all new Terrex trail shoes

2. ASICS for two great uptempo shoes in Magic Speed 4 and Noosa Tri 16 priced very failry priced, a solid update to the Novablast and great  racers in the Paris line.

3. Brooks: for 2 superb max cushion trainers in Glycerin Max and Ghost Max 2 and for having the most complete and coherent trail line in the industry,

Marcel Krebs

1st: HOKA - Excelled both on road and trail; great product lineup plated as well as unplated; especially Cielo X1, Skyward X (road) are so much fun and versatile! Tecton X3 on the trails is an excellent racer which is well balanced between bounce and stability. Wide-Options also really appreciated; would love to see them extended to more plated high-end models as well.

If there is anything missing, it's an absolute high-end racer which is competitive not only regarding propulsion (already achieved) but also in weight.

2nd: ASICS - This was a close call with 1st place; pretty strong lineup like in former years with a very broad product range on the road as well as on the trails; even got better with the new MetaSpeed Paris models for road racing as well as the MetaFuji Trail for runnable offroad races. Upcoming new Metaspeed model seems to get a wider heel which should help with stability especially over marathon distance; battle for the crown in 2025 will become interesting!

3d: Puma - Big leap forward, especially on the road. Lineup pretty complete from easy recovery up to high-end racing option. Also competitively priced.

honorable mentions:

adidas. adidas really gaining traction with the latest releases like the EVO Pro v2, the Pro 4 and the EVO SL which will be widely available in March 2025 and makes for a promising outlook for the brand for the upcoming year.

ON running. With the Cloudstrike LS, ON released an excellent racer which compliments a line of pretty good trainers like the Cloudmonster Hyper. 2025 should become interesting!

TOPO. TOPO made a huge leap forward regarding innovation and looks in 2024. The Specter 2 even became my favorite daily trainer. The combination of a lower drop, a foot-shaped toe-box and a good mid- and rear foot lock down works especially great for everyone with wider feet.

New Balance is our team’s top 2024 brand with a total of 13 points.

New Balance’s overall top placing is largely based on the popularity and especially versatility of its Rebel v4 and Pacer v2 among our contributors. These models show up across multiple categories in the survey while the other top brands it can be argued had a broader range of offerings that we liked.

While only picking up one 1st place Brand of the Year vote, ASICS comes in 2nd with 10 points on the strength of its Paris Series, Magic Speed 4 and Novablast all "fast" shoes

Hoka on the strength of the Cielo X 1 and Skyward X max cushion plated  trainer/racers comes in 3d with 9 points with rapidly improving

adidas is not far behind at 9 points. We would note that compared to New Balance, ASICS, Nike and Hoka our adidas samples in the US were more limited in quantity which may have affected this result..

RoadTrailRun also conducted a second poll of a larger group of contributors for overall brand of the year (road and trail) and in this poll did not require the testers to have personally tested but looking at product, brand progress, and innovation with results: 1. adidas 2. Brooks 3. Hoka

Finally our contributors share some highlights from their 2024 year of running.

Key 2024 Running Highlights, PR's, Races etc.

Peter Stuart

This was a year to fall back in love with running. Was pretty burned out and now I'm loving it again!

Ben David

It was very meaningful to go back to Germany to run the Berlin Marathon. This is the place from which my grandparents fled 80 years ago. That race will always hold a special place in my heart.

Markus Zinkl

Ran my first official marathon this year. Just as a pacer and not to my potential, but the race vibes were real. Next race is already coming up in the spring 2025.

Renee Krusemark

I had my biggest monthly mileage to date in May at 353.3 miles, factoring in a week of recovery when I hardly ran in prep for work and family commitments. Running the Bighorn 52 was a highlight despite having a rough day. The course was gorgeous so it was hard to quit.

Ryan Eiler

Boston Marathon - 2:14

NYC Marathon - 2:13

Nils Scharff

I ran my first three track races ever and had a lot of fun - those won't be my last! But most importantly I PR'd 5 times this year:

5k: 17:29min > 16:59 (which I ran twice!)

10k: 35:56min > 35:43min > 35:26min

Marathon: 2:46:47h > 2:40:05h

Especially the Marathon PB in Berlin was something special. I never felt so good during a marathon and it was just my perfect running day which culminated in a ~3min negative split and a almost 7min PR!

But what almost meant as much to me were my first few coaching steps, which were not just very successful (3x first time marathoners all below 3:30h (2 girls 1 male), 1x 25min marathon PB) but also very satisfying. I learned a lot, established great relationships with my athletes and I'm looking forward to more coaching opportunities going forward.

Jeremy Marie

nothing particular. I'm still learning how my body reacts to loads, while getting older, and still amazed that i keep lit the flame for running and more generally exercising. I deal with injuries way easier now also.

Adam Glueck

I really enjoyed racing the gold rush ski marathon in Tahoe this spring.  It was good to get back on snow and race a 50km in spring conditions on Nordic skis in under 3 hours.

Run highlights for me would be some excellent tempo runs in Shenzhen and Hong Kong, including taking the Strava course record for Mt. Wutong

Sally Reiley

Fewer miles due to hamstring injury in the winter, then fewer races. Highlight was running healthy again and finishing the NYC Marathon in 3:37 for 2nd place AG. Now I am fired up to keep running strong!

Sam Winebaum

As I recovered from my November 2023 broken knee cap I progressed to racing by late summer with two solid 10K, a 5 mile race.a 5K and a 4 mile race. In recovery from my surgery I walked a lot and then hiked extensively in Europe this summer so while my run mileage was down a bit, my time on foot on the move was way u pwith as of today about 1200 miles of running and 1900 miles in total. Interestingly, I ran almost entirely this year in shoes with at least some supercritical foam and my average training paces were faster than pre injury and my day to day recovery faster as well. While my race paces are still a bit slower than in 2023 they are coming back!

Marcel Krebs

My new PB over the half marathon distance in June as it came so surprisingly and unplanned. This was actually meant to be an event for pacing my fiancee but because she got ill I raced it on my own which we decided 24h before the race and without any tapering. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow to achieve the best results.

Similar holds true for my best performance on the trails at an UTMB race so far. In November, I finished the 50k category at Kullamannen strongly despite coming of a season focused on road racing and several niggles during the months leading up to the race. The rolling terrain played well to my strengths and it was just a beautiful day out on the trails!

I'm surprised there was no mention of the Superblast 2, is it the scarcity? 🤔

Great job as usual, Sam, from you and the gang. Just wondering… Will Jeff Beck be making an appearance on the list this year? I miss his wide-foot perspective. Thanks again for another year of fabulous reviews. You guys are the best!

And Derek too

I'd like to hear Joost's opinion on this year's super shoes please! Last year he recommended the Prime X 2 Sprung and I am very happy with that purchase! Thanks!
