TrailMix 2.0 12L Hydration Pack ($150)
Renee: Pack all the snacks! The TrailMix 2.0 is 15% lighter than the previous version. With a 12L capacity the pack is meant for maximum all-day adventure storage. While listed as a pack for running or hiking, the TrailMix 2.0 is built for hiking and trekking rather than running. I did run a bit with the pack, but with the massive storage options and one-size-fits-most, it’s better for hiking. Nathan has several other vest/packs that work better for running if that’s your jam. I enjoy the Pinnacle (RTR Review).
Let’s talk back storage first because the TrailMix 2.0 has a lot of it. The pack comes with a 1.5L bladder that drops into a zipped back pocket. The shoulder straps have a pass through slit for the hose to move comfortably around to the front. I looped the hose through the front strap down to the hose sternum attachment, great for preventing the hose from flopping around.
Over the bladder pocket is a huge roll-up pocket with buckles on the sides to close and expand storage. Most of the pack’s overall storage is within this back pocket.
I hiked with extra pants, a jacket, and a hat in this large pocket. Over that massive pocket is another pocket with a small square Velco to close. An extra pair of gloves or food items fit nicely.
Bungee cords wrap the outside, so another jacket or coat can be stored there. Both sides include two bungees each for pole placement. The pack works best using the back storage to its maximum.
The front storage features two pockets on both sides. The front pockets can fit a 20oz flask each. I suggest a flask that is shaped wide and short. There is no zipper pocket in the front, but my iPhone 14 Max fits in one of the open pockets. I found the front pockets best for food items and my phone rather than hydration flasks. For hiking, the flasks in the front feel okay, but for running, the security is not as comfortable as other options. Both the front straps slide, which helps for fit and comfort across the
chest.
The pack has two adjustable straps on each side to adjust the one-size-fits-most aspect. I usually wear a size small for a vest, so I had to pull these side straps tight. For a one-size fit, the TraiMix 2.0 fits fine in terms of hiking.
Overall, I’d suggest the pack for all-day hikers who need to carry a complete extra set of clothing items for weather conditions. For a one-size fit, I found it comfortable and secure for hiking even as someone who wears a size small vest for running.

Renee is a former U.S. Marine journalist, which is when her enjoyment of running and writing started. She isn’t that awesome of a runner, but she tries really hard. Most of her weekly 50-60 miles take place on rural country roads in Nebraska, meaning mud, gravel, dirt, hills, and the occasional field. She has PR’s of 1:30:59 for the half marathon and 3:26:45 for the marathon.
