Hoka ONE ONE 2020 Previews: Carbon X-SPE, Clifton 7, Torrent 2, Bondi 7, Stinson ATR 6

Article by Sam Winebaum
Hoka ONE ONE focused on functional and aesthetic upper changes for Fall 2020 although the Torrent 2 gets new multi directional lugs and the Stinson ATR 6 a wider heel and met head platform. We were not shown any new models including race shoes but who knows what may emerge later in 2020! The Carbon X came out in 2019 without ever being shown in advance at the Running Event or elsewhere.

Clifton 7 ($130)
Update:  Clifton 7 review

Clifton 7 will weigh men's 8.7 oz / 247 g, women's 7.1 oz / 201g so a very small drop in weight.

The Clifton gets a new open engineered mesh sandwich upper and a swept back achilles collar to relieve pressures there. The collar was fairly substantial with the top tab also allowing easy pull on with the former webbing pull loop removed. It gets a tongue gusset to keep the tongue in place. Overall the upper felt softer and looked cleaner than Clifton 6. No changes to midsole or outsole were highlighted. Update releases August 2020 including in wide sizing.

Carbon X-SPE ($200)

The SPE edition of the great Carbon X is designed to make the shoe more of a training option, something runners used the Carbon X for extensively for given its great cushion and propulsive plate and even with its race type upper. Hoka adds a molded heel collar for more support instead of the Carbon X's embroidered rear support to a new mono mesh polyester upper, reinforces the eyelets, and adds some forefoot overlays to what is still a single layer mesh upper. No changes to the Profly midsole and rubberized foam outsole or carbon plate were called out. At 8.8 oz / 250g vs 8.5 oz for the original Carbon X the weight gain is minimal. At $200 there is a price increase over the standard Carbon X. Releases June 2020.

Torrent 2 ($120)
Update: Torrent 2 multi tester review

The Torrent 2 gets a recycled content mesh upper with the same fit as the original Torrent, a great all arounder. The most significant changes are to the outsole with a a new more multi directional lug patterns, hard to see with the cool marbled look. It gains about 0.2 oz, to come in at 9.3 oz / 264g men's, 7.6 oz / 215g.  Torrent 2 releases June 2020.

Rincon 2 ($115)

The fast and light Rincon gets an engineered sandwich mesh upper as the Clifton 7 receives. Previously it had a single layer mesh upper with inner underlays. This upper felt a touch more substantial.  No other changes were called out by Hoka. Official weight for men's will be 7.7 oz / 218 g, so no change in official weight. Need to confirm women's weights. Releases August 2020.

Bondi 7 ($150)

The max cushion road Bondi has an open engineered mesh upper with a memory foam heel collar and TPU  3D print overlays, for more mid foot support.
Weight comes in at men's 10.7 oz / 303g, women's 8.9 oz / 252g, so a small drop in weight for the men's. Women's weights to be confirmed.  Releases September 2020 including in wide sizing.

Stinson ATR 6  ($160)
Update: Stinson ATR 6 review
TC

The most heavily cushioned Hoka trail shoe with a massive 37mm heel 32 mm forefoot stack the Stinson gets more width at the heel and met heads under foot which should translate to a broader fit as well. . We did not get upper pictures but it will get an engineered mesh upper with recycled polyester fibers. Weight for the massive cushion is a reasonable 11.7 oz / 332 g men's, 9.8 oz / 278 g women's. Releases in Julyt 2020

I don't really understand the point of the SPE... Hoka already has a huge catalog of daily trainers, many of them lighter and all of them cheaper. Is this basically the Zoom Fly to the Next%?

Hoping for a slightly tighter midfoot lockdown on the torrent 2... Looks like the overlays are at least going in the correct direction this time:) Also, is it me or does the heel padding look a bit tidier / less bulky? Perhaps I'm being to optimistic.

What is going to be a benefit on the bondi 7 vs bondi 6

Hi Unknown,
It is an upper change from what we were told so if Bondi 6 works well for you not much it would seem. From comparing pictures and recollection the 7 upper may be more open and breathable.

Has there been any word on the release of the Challenger 6? Seems like the 5s have been around for a while now.
