Patagonia Capilene Cool Merino Blend Women's Shirt Review

Article by Dominique Winebaum

Women’s Capilene Cool Merino Blend Shirt ($69)

A merino blend wool technical shirt made with 65% RWS  (Responsible Wool Standard) wool and 35% recycled polyester, the Capilene Cool Merino Blend Shirt is a great option when temperatures are on the cool side during t-shirt weather season, and as a layer during shoulder seasons.  The black color felt a bit warm along with the merino fabric in hot weather – 90 degrees.

The fit is true to size in the medium sample and as per specs “slim-fitted.”  I am 5’6’ and 138 lbs. I might have even sized down to a small.

Comfortable and soft next-to-skin, the merino blend keeps you dry by naturally wicking moisture along with controlling odor. I tend to sweat mildly, yet I am impressed that my shirt is still smelling fresh after two hikes (4 hours) and two runs (4 miles).  It is a good idea to air out your shirt after a workout as a way to refresh the fabric without washing it.

A streamlined design made with performance fabric with careful attention to details, the Cool Merino has  set-in sleeves and vents and drop-tail hem, along with a loop for hanging in the back

The Patagonia logo is discreet and sewn on the front bottom left of the shirt.

I wore the Capilene Cool Merino Blend Shirt for two days trekking on the Tour des Combins.  It was my cooler option shirt and a great layer and was  odor resistant.  Shown above after a total of 12 plus days of wear.

Wearing a backpack over the shirt did not damage the fabric as sometimes happens when the waistband buckle rubs against the fabric and the shoulders are also not damaged from the pack straps.

It is made in Sri Lanka in a Fair Trade Certified™ factory with the merino wool responsibly sourced and in accordance with the Responsible Wool Standard.

Available in 4 different colors: Black, Cascade Green, Potters Red, and Current Blue in sizes ranging from XS to XXL.

I would definitely recommend the Capilene Cool Merino Blend Shirt for its versatility for a wide range of activities including travel, high performance, quick drying properties, and odor resistance. It is well--priced for a technical shirt, has proved durable so far,  and I expect to get a lot of wear from it.
