Ibex Women's Springbok Shorts and Short Sleeve Tee Reviews: Merino Wool & Tencel – Ultimate Natural Summer Performance

Article by Dominique Winebaum

Springbok Short ($100) Springbok Short Sleeve Tee ($95)

Ibex has entered a new “woolies”  territory with the Springbok Collection by blending two natural fibers – Merino wool & Tencel™ – to produce a wool-based fabric with 45% Merino, 45% Tencel™ and 10% nylon. The high percentage of Tencel™ significantly improves thermoregulation by increasing wicking and cooling properties.

Tencel is an environmentally friendly fabric derived from sustainably grown eucalyptus, with excellent breathability and moisture wicking properties.  As featured in the Springbok Collection, the fabric is described as “Merino Tencel™ with additionally a Merino Edge cool finish which enhances the cooling feel and the versatility of the fabric in various climates.

I tested the women’s Springbok Short ($100) and Springbok Short Sleeve T-shirt ($95), both a cut above my regular running apparel.  The style is classy and highly functional, but what truly stands out, is the fabric, which feels so soft to the touch and next to skin, and which is designed to keep you cool and dry in hot and humid conditions.  Thermoregulation at its natural best!  The Springbok apparel collection combines the excellent qualities of merino wool - moisture wicking, breathable, lightweight, soft and comfortable, odor resistant, and holds its shape - with an equal percentage of Tencel™ for an enhanced cooling experience.

The Springbok Short ($90)

The fit is true to size,  “close-to-the body design” which is extremely comfortable and provides just the right amount of coverage.  Ibex recommends sizing up for a looser fit, however, I am quite happy with my regular size, small.

The Springbok Short is not a split short, nor is it baggy, yet the range of motion is great when running. With a 3.5 mm inseam, the length is on the medium side, not too long and not too short.

After my runs on the indoor track (mind you I am at 7000 ft elevation and the snow coverage is deep along with cold temps), I transition to the workout machines and I do leg press in total confidence – no awkward opening into a brief!

I like the style which is both classy and attractive along with being functional.  The short features two pockets: one small size inside pocket around the waist and a zippered pocket in the back big enough to hold an i-phone.  One small disappointment with my Springbok Shorts is that the zippered pocket sits too low resulting in my phone bouncing against my tushie when running.

The outer layer of the short is made of nylon fabric with spandex that is lightweight and provides a good amount of stretch.  A built-in brief made of Merino Tencel™ provides ultimate next-to-skin comfort along with optimum thermoregulation.  The waistband is made of elastic with an interior drawstring for a secure and comfortable fit.

I enjoy running in my Springbok Shorts, albeit indoors for now, and anticipate that they will become my go-to short this summer.

Available in 4 attractive colors – charcoal, beetroot, soft moss, and black.

Springbok Short Sleeve Tee ($95)

Made with Merino Tencel™ fabric (see description above), the Springbok short sleeve Tee is quick drying, lightweight and designed to maximize your comfort for those long workouts. The underarms have gusseted fabric to optimize movement along forward shoulder seams to prevent backpack shafting.

The length of the Tee provides good coverage (no belly showing) and the Merino Tencel™ fabric drapes well, is extremely comfortable and lightweight, and provides optimum thermoregulation.

The Springbok Short Sleeve Tee is available in 5 different attractive colors: soft moss, silver melange, gold, dusty amethyst, and deep ocean.

Ibex apparel is an investment in high quality and long lasting sportswear.  With fewer washes in between wear given the odor resistant properties of merino wool, it helps save time and resources along with extending the life of your garment.  This product is “Climate Neutral Certified'' which is another reason to feel good about wearing naturally sourced Ibex apparel.

This said, I need several months of wear to form an opinion about the durability of a product.  I am a bit concerned that the high perecentage of Tencel™ (45%) might impact the durability of my short sleeve tee, given that the fabric might be more delicate. It does use Corespun technology to wrap the Merino and Tencel around a nylon filament for additional tensile strength. Time will tell.

The Springbok collection is available at Ibex now
