Hoka One One EVO Speedgoat Initial Video Review & Comparisons

Article by Sam Winebaum

Hoka One One EVO Speedgoat ($160)

Watch our Initial Video Review & Comparisons to EVO Mafate and Speedgoat 3

The EVO Speedgoat starts with the super cushioned 32mm heel / 28 mm forefoot Speedgoat underfoot platform, makes it more flexible, and adds a soft and foot friendly, fast draining, very breathable kevlar like fiber Matryx upper similar to the EVO Mafate 2. The result is a drop in weight to about 9.3 oz / 264 g from about 10.2-10.3 oz for the Speedgoat 3, leading to a remarkable amount of cushion, protection, and comfort for the weight.

The EVO Speedgoat has been the race shoe of choice for many Hoka elites this year including Jim Walmsley who set a Western States 100 record in them as well as more recently grabbing a fine 3d place at the very competitive Sierre-Zinal 30K in Switzerland.

My test pair fits me true to size, no question, given the new soft Matryx front upper and Lycra stretch gusset. Our full multi tester review will publish soon.

HI Sam, do you think you'd train in this over the speedgoat 3? Wondering if the upper durability would offset the increased cost

I really wonder what will be the main difference over why I should chose this shoe over the evo mafate 2? Weight wise almost the same?

HI Andreas,
As said in my video (I think) EVO Speedgoat is about 1 oz or 30 g lighter. The other difference is the EVO Speedgoat is 3mm less stack front and back so should be more stable and is more flexible. The EVO Mafate on the other hand has a more responsive ride with more pop on firmer surfaces.

I have about 30ish miles on my pair of Evo's and I think they run about a .5 size larger than the SG2's, I don't know if they played with the last at all or if it's just because of the stripped-down EVO upper with the neoprene toe area or what. I have put thousands of miles on Speedgoat 2's and always a size 13, I have an Evo on the way in size 12.5 so I guess I'll see if they feel better. For me the jury is still out on these, the upper doesn't retain any water though like you said in the video in a hot environment like down in the south it makes the sweat start to pool in your shoe/sock. The matryx upper is also very stretchy and you have to come down on the laces pretty hard to get the same locked-down feeling that you get with the SG2.

For reference, I'm a 12.5 in Torrents, 13 in Speed Instincts, 13 in Speedgoat 2, 12.5 in Rincon and 12.5 in Huaka.

Hope these comments help someone out that's trying to decide on sizing or wether to get these shoes.
