Salomon Running Courtney Dauwalter Shortney Tee and Shorts Reviews.

Article by Renee Krusemark

Salomon Running Shortney Tee ($70) and Shortney Shorts ($90)

Courtney Dauwalter remains [un]arguably one of the best (if not THE BEST) ultra trail runners, only adding to her credentials after smashing the Western States course record in 2023 by over an hour!

Her fun-loving attitude and race day smiles embody the trail atmosphere us mediocre runners enjoy. Salomon wasn’t wrong to finally sell her signature long shorts and tee in a women’s specific style. While the Shortney Short Sleeve T-Shirt and Shortney Shorts won’t make you faster, you might have more fun wearing the gear while hopping around on single track. Plus, “sky’s out, thighs out” doesn’t have to be our motto, ladies. Cover those legs if it makes you comfortable.

First, both the shirt and shorts are quality performance wear from Salomon. Add in the Courtney-inspired style and the $70 (tee) and $90 (shorts) price tags are reasonable compared to similar products.

Salomon Shortney Short Sleeve T-Shirt

The shirt features a 100% polyester fabric with “inserts” (the black under the armpits and along the back) made of 67% wool. Incorporated is  37.5 Technology to maintain relative humidity and core body temperature by using  ultra-porous volcanic minerals and coconut-derived activated carbon particles that are incorporated into the fabrics. The particles absorb infrared energy from the body which energizes the  particles to speed evaporation and remove humidity next to your skin.

I was sent my typical size small. The fit is loose, but not baggy.

At times I prefer a women’s medium for extra length, which is not an issue with the tee. No need to size down if you’re worried about the fit. I wore the shirt for a 50 miler (Black Hills) under my Nathan Pinnacle 4L vest. The weather was cool, becoming cold during heavy rain. I had some chills because of exposed arms, but didn’t feel the need to stop for my rain jacket.

The sleeve length and neck line worked great to prevent any chafing from the vest (I don’t usually wear a tank under a vest for that reason).

For comparison, I also really like the Nathan Dash Short Sleeve Shirt 2.0, which provides good volume in the same size without being too short in length (an issue I have with some size-small, women-specific shirts). The Shortney T-Shirt is a running specific shirt (very see through fabric) while the Dash 2.0 shirt can double for a casual shirt too.  The shirt cleans up well, and despite being extremely light weight with minimal seaming, I have no durability issues after several long runs and one 50-mile race. The odor-resistance is fantastic.  I washed the shirt with the rest of my work-out clothes and machine dried it. The shirt has minor dirt stains, but that’s to be expected after playing around in the mud.

Salomon Shortney Shorts

Hate short shorts? I hear you. With a 10.23” length, your quads are your own business and nobody else’s. Like the tee, the shorts are super lightweight and feature 37.5 tech. The shorts have no liner and are a transparent/light fabric, so running tights/underwear are needed (or not, just be you and remember the shorts are transparent). The shorts are for performance in my opinion, not necessary for years of training and washing. The seaming is minimal, so washing on delicate and line-drying are  good ideas.

The plus side to the minimal seaming is the comfort and weight. The waist line has elastic on the sides (not the front or back).

During hot, sweaty running, there’s less irritation along the waistline for that reason. The waist line sits mid-to high, but falls lower on me while running, which worked well for me.

The downside for me, as a short-legged person, is the shorts are a bit longer than I prefer. I know.. that’s the point. I’m 66.5” inches in height, but with short legs I’d prefer maybe two inches less length. If you have long legs and prefer lengthy shorts, these are a better option than a men’s shorts. The crotch on a men’s fit shorts can be too baggy, which won’t be an issue with these shorts. The shorts are long, but not baggy. When soaking wet, the shorts were clingy. I wore the tee for a 50 mile race, but elected not to wear the shorts for that reason (I wore my Brooks Carbonite 4” shorts).

In conclusion, if you hate tight running gear, both items are worthy. The shirt is a great option for training and racing, in my opinion, especially if your typical size shirt feels short and you have a longer torso. The shorts need careful care to maintain durability. While they might be too long for my stumps for legs, long-legged women looking for long shorts that don’t have a baggy crotch (like a men’s shorts) will be happy.

Renee is a former U.S.Marine journalist, which is when her enjoyment of running and writing started. She isn’t that awesome of a runner, but she tries really hard. Most of her weekly 50-60 miles take place on rural country roads in Nebraska, meaning mud, gravel, dirt, hills, and the occasional field. She has PR’s of 1:30:59 for the half marathon and 3:26:45 for the marathon.
