Ciele Athletics TRLBucket-Comp-Onehundred SL Review: the ultimate running and any adventure hat?

Article by Sam Winebaum

Ciele Athletics TRLBucket-Comp- Onehundred SL ($80)

On our recent trip to Montreal we had to stop by run hat (and apparel) masters Ciele Athletics.

Nana gave us a tour of their MTL flagship store (and HQ) which features all their products as well as their collabs. Her video tour is here.

I always wear a hat when running and have a vast collection. Most of all I focus on cooling and moisture wicking away from my eyeglasses and of course also from head.

I was very impressed with the Ciele GOCap Solar Elite  I recently tested and reviewed here

The TRL Bucket immediately caught my eye. More bush hat boonie styled than bucket, with more classic styling than Ciele’s modern rounded usual look, I knew right away that it would be an ideal run, hike, travel, work outside lid.

And since I received the sample at the store, it has literally not left my head. Of course, it is loaded with Ciele’s comfort and cooling tech, immaculately crafted and detailed, and made from 100% materials

Details and Features

Features

The recycled FLEXweave woven fabric brings UPF protection and makes up the main panels of the brim and front of the TRL. It is soft and moisture absorbing. While crisp and smooth when new, with use the brim has gotten a bit more relaxed and less structured.

The liner in the front and the sweatband is a lightweight COOLmatic | PLUS PROPHORmesh™ fabric for structure, ventilation, and odor control. This mesh is 3D and quite thick but with an open structure so sweat is both absorbed but also has a path to be evaporated to the outer shell.

As in the GOCap Solar, ZIPmesh is found on the back panels, which is breathable, structured and tear resistant. This ripstop mesh stands on its own so to speak, and as with the cap, is not really see through from the outside  when worn but clearly very open when looked at from the insideoff the head. There is a pull cord at the rear to secure the hat in wind.

We have an adjustable chin strap as well as a small rear cord oop for hanging.  The sides can be snapped up bush hat style.

The front logo is in a reflective print.

Fit

As I have a large head I went with the L/XL.

My wife Dominique is planning to test one during our 8 day trek around the Grand Combin later this summer and she will go with a S/M as my large is a bit too big on her.

Performance and Conclusions

The TRL provides lots of sun protection, wicks and handles moisture brilliantly.  Its style sits between a bucket and a bush/cowboy hat increasing its versatility to just about any activity or summer occasion. I have worn it every day, for pretty much every run, hike and for outside yard work. I was frankly surprised that this “thicker” more substantial than my usual sun boonie (Salomon S/Lab Speed Bob 2) performed so well in our summer high heat and humidity.

Never overheated or over saturated, the combination of wicking headband and brim/front of the hat surfaces took care of dissipating moisture and heat given their 3D construction and the exterior large evaporating surfaces. The TRL is truly the ultimate run, adventure, do anything hat and is highly recommended.
