Hey, look who we met in the Copley Plaza, Phil Rogers
0:07
Hi, Phil. Hello, Sam. Good to meet you. And, you know, talk about running and cross country and trail running and marathoning
0:16
in particular, of course, it is the Boston Marathon weekend and how, you know, we've
0:22
been long time runners for so many years, but just meeting some of the competitors
0:27
the realers, you know, and how our sport, I think, presents the greatest challenges
0:35
to us, but gives us the most rewards. It gives us health or fitness and meeting people from around the world
0:43
It's a global sport and most sports can't say that. You know, so we're part of athletics, track and field, you know, but Boston, Boston's
0:52
a different deal. And once you come here, you know it. My first time, I was a complete failure as a marathoner
0:59
I dropped out at Heartbreak Hill. It was one of those hot days in Boston
1:03
So Boston is, I believe, I think it's the greatest challenge in the marathon world
1:09
They have to qualify now, which is very tough. I didn't have to when I was a new marathoner
1:17
But I think there's a camaraderie in our sport and it's also competitive
1:23
Our sport is a unique sport in that sense, you know, but it's like all the other teams
1:28
you know, like in hockey, the team works together. And so this morning I ran with my partner, Karen, and we ran out on the river because
1:35
the beauty of the city is along the river, the Charles River
1:39
And so you see that and it lifts you up, but it's hard running. A little breeze out there
1:44
Yeah, it was a chilly morning. And so I noticed you've got puma
1:49
You've got some puma. What's going on, Bill? Tell us. I've got puma shoes, very nice, well cushioned
1:55
I ran in puma back in 81, 82, 83 here at Boston
2:01
And they were trying to get into the US side of square racing, marathoning
2:07
And so I ran with them for three years, but they had a hard time getting developed as
2:14
running shoes then. They went with Usain Bolt, the great sprinter from Jamaica, years later
2:19
But now they're coming back onto the roads because this sport is going to keep growing
2:23
and growing and growing. Simon, you know, you're a longtime runner, you've seen it grow too
2:28
And so it's like, you know, we were talking earlier how the door is open to everybody here
2:34
It doesn't matter your height, your weight, your race, your religion, your income, nothing
2:39
All the barriers fall that divide people. And so this is different and that's what I love
2:48
It's hard. It's hard. It's a wonderful weekend. And thank you very much for chatting with us, Bill. Same. Okay
2:57
We're fellow old timers. Long may we run. I love that. I say let's run forever
