I do like the slight under arch support of Topo, and the Altra/Timp is absolutely flatter under the arch. The Timp 4 outsole is definitely weak, so if they do Vibram in V5 that should be a big upgrade. Was really hoping they'd work out because I like the fit of the Timp 4, but would prefer the Vibram sole. The rest of the fit felt nice and seemed like great materials and quality, so probably a great shoe for whoever they fit. I think I'll end up with the Timps, but also want to try Saucony Peregrine 13 and Speedgoat 5 in wide.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10529476.post-81392260961304506062022-10-16T11:43:36.835-06:002022-10-16T11:43:36.835-06:00It's the shoe itself, not the insole. There's much more cushion with the Pursuit though, so perhaps it may feel less noticeable than the firmer, closer to the ground RV4?Mike Phttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13981870314602171757noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10529476.post-61417131541104217662022-09-12T05:17:09.601-06:002022-09-12T05:17:09.601-06:00Is the arch support similar in the Runventure 4?

I do tend to agree with a lot of your assessments - Timp 4 outsole is pretty weak for technical terrain, SG5 is definitely narrow and also doesn't work for me (even wide), MS3 is definitely roomier than SG, but not overly so.

Unfortunately for you- yes it is generally a feature of Topo shoes to have a bit of support under the arch. If you check out my reviews of ST-4 and Magnifly 4 you'll see that it's something that I actually like as opposed to the flatter underfoot feel of Altras. I guess we just have different arch anatomy and/or preferences.

Two shoes I would recommend that might work well for you are Xodus Ultra and the new Mafate Speed 4. Mafate Speed 4 has more cushion than V3 and also is more accomodating in the toebox. Both of those shoes may have just the extra bit of space you need.Mike Phttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13981870314602171757noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10529476.post-72081530297395136512022-08-24T09:57:10.346-06:002022-08-24T09:57:10.346-06:00Hey Y'all! Thanks for an awesome review. This ...Hey Y'all! Thanks for an awesome review. This review was one of several I read before giving the Topo Pursuit a try!

I was looking for a new high-cushion trail runner/hiker for running and summer mountaineering. I tried the Altra Timp 4, Hoka Speedgoat 5, Hoka Speedgoat 5 in Wide, Hoka Mafate Speed 3, and Altra Mont Blanc, and these Topo Pursuits.

Altra Timp 4: Good cushion. Comfortable shoe. Upper feels plastic-y and uncomfortable. Outsole is an Altra proprietary rubber with sub-par traction. If I'm out on class 3, class 4, or even class 5 scrambles at 12-14k feet with high exposure, I can't be on rubber I can't trust to have good traction with my life on the line.

Standard Hoka Speedgoat 5: Far too narrow. As soon as I put it on, my two lateral (smallest) toes were smashed. I knew right away it wouldn't work. Not for people that like toe room or comfortable toes, unless you have exceptionally narrow feet.

Altra Mont Blanc: Mostly comfortable and feels good, but they tried to do something new with the heel that just didn't work for me. Lots of heel slippage.

Hoka Mafate Speed 3: wider and more comfortable toe-box than the Speedgoat 5, but still a tad too narrow. Also, not quite as plush and comfortable as the SG. I've heard they take about 50 miles to break in though, so that may be something to consider.

Hoka SpeedGoat 5 W: This wound up being my winner. The toe-box has ALMOST the right amount of room, like 98% of what I need. I could use like two more mm on the lateral side, but its enough. Almost everything else rocks, except the heel. A little slippage in the heel. Not ideal. I might try sizing down a 1/2 size to see if that will be perfect.

Topo Pursuit (This shoe.): I REALLY wanted to love the Topo Pursuit. Honestly, on paper, it's my top choice. I've been zero drop for about 15 years. The Topo Pursuit is zero drop, locked-in heel, wide toe-box, and Vibram MegaGrip. Unfortunately, the Topo Pursuit has a really high arch that was a no-go for me. When I put them on, I could instantly feel the high pressure in my arch. Standing and walking for about 5-10 minutes, they start to get uncomfortable and my feet start falling asleep. I tried running in them, and was in pain within 10 minutes. Unfortunately, they're just not going to work for me.

QUESTION FOR RTR and Mike P: Do you know if this really high arch / lots of arch support is typical of all Topo's shoes? Or is the Pursuit unique here? I've got my eye on a pair of Specter's as my next road shoes.

My History: My last trail shoes, in order from most recent to long ago have been Altra Lone Peaks (4.5), Superiors (4), and Merrell Trail Gloves. Last road shoes have been Altra Torin 4.5 Plush, Torin 4, Escalante 2s, Solstice XT, and Solstice. I've been in zero-drop shoes for almost 15 years, and used to be in more minimalist shoes until I experienced significant petatarsal impact pain in minimalist shoes, and started upping my cushioning. I've loved Altra's for a few years, but they only tend to last about 200 miles. Sometimes less. (My Torin 4.5 Plush only lasted about 150 miles, but as a disclaimer, their first 50 miles was the Grand Canyon R2R2R.)

Thanks RTR!Mr. Shttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11376350888562056233noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10529476.post-28696068807092937932022-07-31T21:05:19.388-06:002022-07-31T21:05:19.388-06:00Sorry I misread that - I haven't run in MT4. ...Sorry I misread that - I haven't run in MT4. But I am testing Runventure 4 - which is a touch snugger than MTN Racer 2, but size-wise the same as well.

I'm borderline 9.5/10 in Topo. I'd go 9.5 for any regular length runs, but if I wanted to take them out for longer stuff, I'd go 10 for a little bit of extra space in front of the toes. For me foothold is the same between both sizes - nice and secure.Mike Phttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13981870314602171757noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10529476.post-15086248015245848272022-07-31T21:01:38.938-06:002022-07-31T21:01:38.938-06:00Anon -

ST-4 is the most snug, with MTN Racer 2 having a bit more space - more or less the standard Topo fit. The Pursuit is definitely the most roomy - the most space in the toebox of any Topo I've run.Mike Phttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13981870314602171757noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10529476.post-6609369100464921062022-07-23T11:04:36.538-06:002022-07-23T11:04:36.538-06:00Thank you for the review! Of the three, the SG is most protective in terms of not feeling anything at all. Xodus Ultra is 2nd- there's a bit more ground feel but you do have a rock plate. The Pursuit has similar level of ground feel as the Xodus Ultra, but with no rock plate you'll feel it if you take a direct sharp impact underfoot. But under most normal scenarios it's still very good protection. When you describe the Hoka SG5 and Saucony Xodus Ultra as more protective than the Pursuit, does that also cover underfoot protection from sharp objects like rocks and roots? I just wanted some extra clarification; sometimes “protection” could refer to the upper and kicking rocks from other review sites.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10529476.post-2390220867356275352022-07-05T16:23:48.727-06:002022-07-05T16:23:48.727-06:00JASON- There's a lot of great options out ther...JASON- There's a lot of great options out there. I'd say you can't go wrong with the Xodus Ultra - it's a great all around shoe, and neither lightweight nor heavy. Recommending others would be based a lot on your preferences as well as fit & feel. If you need lots of cush, the new Speedgoat 5 is great, but may feel confining and possibly unstable if you're new to trails. If you need a decent amount of cushion, as well as foot space - the Pursuit will be a great pick when it comes out in August. A solid shoe at an amazing price is the new Brooks Divide 3. Those are just a few options that are solid.Mike Phttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13981870314602171757noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10529476.post-81664298862477291912022-07-05T00:27:52.219-06:002022-07-05T00:27:52.219-06:00All kinds of running gods, can you help me choose ...All kinds of running gods, can you help me choose a few pairs of shoes?
