Introduction:

The Osprey Soelden 32 is a high volume, lightweight backcountry pack, built with durable, high end materials. It is  ideal for long days of ski touring, snowboarding or for other winter activities.  The Soelden 32 is loaded with winter specific conveniences that set it apart for your typical daypack, such as easy and secure ski/board/snowshoe carry solutions, easy access to the main compartment without taking the pack entirely off and many other well thought out details.

Features/Key Attributes/Carry Options:

The Soelden 32 is specifically designed to easily carry a pair of skis, either A-frame style or diagonal across the back.

Contact points where the skis interface with the pack are also reinforced to minimize any wear due to rubbing.  Attaching the skis via either method is quick, easy and secure.

Looking  at the back of the pack, the orange material is a lightweight thermoformed pad for comfort, support and also is made of a material that minimizes snow and ice build up.

The rear panel is zippered and can be opened while wearing the pack by leaving the waist belt secured, removing the shoulder straps and rotating 180 degrees so the pack is in front.

This can be handy at times to quickly access key items, though if the pack is stuffed full and weighted down, it can be a bit difficult to keep in place and operate the zipper (part of this is that I find the zipper is very burly and has a lot of resistance).

Once inside the rear main compartment, there is plenty of room for any combination of food, clothing, jacket, accessories, etc…  There are also two additional pockets to organize any smaller items or stuff: a two way radio, thin water bottle or whatever you can fit in there.

The front main pocket is roomy and also has sleeves specifically designed to hold a probe and shovel.

On the left side of the waist belt is a roomy zippered pocket, where I typically store easy access snacks.

I wish the right side had another zippered pocket, but instead has a gear loop for hanging an ice ax or clipping other gear to.

There is also a handy stretch mesh helmet net that tucks neatly into its own pocket.

I prefer to stow the helmet as shown below, but if you want, you can stretch the net up and over the top and stow your helmet in that position (I don’t care for this method because it then blocks the zipper for the upper small stow pocket and half the J zipper for front compartment.

On top of the pack is a roomy zippered stash pocket that can easily hold a bunch of food, sunglasses, hat, gloves, inReach, etc…

I am 5’9”/145lbs with a short torso and long legs, but the Soelden 32 is quite adjustable and fits me well no matter how many layers I have on and can fit a wide range of body sizes/shapes.

Performance/Conclusions/Recommendations:

I have been using the Soelden 32 multiple times per week all winter for backcountry skiing and snowshoeing and have found that performance is excellent.  I really appreciate the capacity, layout, ability to carry a heavy load, comfort, stability, durability and ease of carrying winter gear on the pack, be it skis or easily stowing my snowshoes for above treeline carrying (most importantly it can be done fast and with mittens on).

If I could recommend any improvements, I would suggest adding sleeves on either side to carry water bottles (I know, they get in the way of A-Frame ski carry, but it would be nice to have the bottle storage option when not carrying skis A-Frame style, which for me is about most of the time).

It would also be great to have an outer stretch mesh pocket covering the back of the pack for quick access to a jacket or other clothing type items you want quick access to.  Another zippered pocket on the waist belt would be good too (they could also keep the gear loop), or perhaps some pocket options on the shoulder straps as  on their Duro line of running vests.  Either way, the Soelden 32 is an ideal pick for full Winter days in the backcountry and I would highly recommend it!
